Medowood South Branch Loop - TRAIL

Medowood South Branch Loop - Trail, Lorton, Virginia

This 4.5 mile loop with a short approach spur is maintained by BLM. This trail is well-groomed, rolling, and fit for beginners, families and fast spins for experienced riders. Improvements are in construction including a long bridge over a marsh. Horse trails cross at times and deer run wild. Clockwise is said to be more climbing and slower while counter clockwise is said to be quicker.

Hiking trails surround the area and this makes a great destination for mixed groups.

Just like the other reviews say - brillant trail for beginners and families. Great afterwork workout loop for everbody else. Perfect trail in the summer as it is shaded the entire way and doesn't get overgrown with thorns like Laurel HIll and Wakefield. The new freeride section in the middle is the bomb - like a pump track on steroids.

Clockwise - downhills are shallower and longer, uphills are steeper. Counterclock - the opposite, steep downs and longer gentler ups. Despite the description above, I think its faster and flows better going clockwise. Its a good workout both ways. With the one-way freeride seciton open now, its possible to ride in a "figure-8" to mix it up and make the trail longer since the main loop is on the short side.

I'm a regular rider of this trail. Some really great terrain for beginners on the main trail and if you ride it fast it's a good workout for intermediate or advanced riders. The new portion of the trail is complete; great curves and some good rollers for more experienced riders. There is never a crowd and there is ample car parking in three differet locations; Colchester Road, Belmont Road and Gunston Elementary School. I highly recommend this trail.

3+ miles of flowy greatness! I was seriously stoked to find this little gem so close to Ft. Belvoir; it's not very long and there's only one loop, but it's absolutely worth making a trip out there. The entire trail is deep within a hardwood forest with enough up and down to keep you on your toes. This would be a great training route if ridden at full speed.

Great flow in either direction, but I think I prefer clockwise.
