Mill Stone Hill - Trail, Barre, Vermont

Mill Stone Hill - Trail, Barre, Vermont

DESCRIPTION

Terrific place for any type of rider. Finally a true mountain biker''s funpark. Single track all over the place. You can make loop after loop and not ride the same trail twice. Some of the single track here is a bit beyond my capabilities, but I suppose you hardcore junkies out there will love it. Scenery is cool too! Way nice riding around the old granite quarries.

Millstone is tons of fun! Probably the most technical riding that I've done in VT. The bridge system is really cool too. The map was a bit of a pain, we kept missing junctions as well as the signs can be tucked away. But, there is no way that I'm not going back. Cool place!

We took the red loop map and road the new side in the morning and the old side in the afternoon. The morning was much more advanced and challenging (jumps, bridges, rock combos, etc.) then the afternoon (mostly roots systems and some difficult rock combos). Overall, there are tons of trails to ride, the problem is there never seems to be any smooth spots to get any serious speed going. The root system here is over the top...constant vibration through the arms and very challenging in spots. My main complaint is the map. The legend is on one side and the trail numbers and names are on the other. And because there are so many trails running off of the labelled ones it's difficult to know whether or not you are still on the marked trail or something else. We ended up on different trails and got turned around quite a bit. Many other venues (such as Killington and Kingdom Trails) have way better map and signage systems. My overall rating of 3 would have been higher if the trails had more flow to them and the map was easier to read...there real potential here...as I'm sure they are still growing and gaining ridership.

We only had two hours to ride, and so we only got a foretaste of what this place has to offer. We liked what we saw, and will definitely be going back. The trails we rode are challenging enough to be fun and rewarding but not overwhelming for most riders- advanced intermediate level. I cleaned almost everything on a 29er single speed. They're a little bit rocky and rooty, but not too much. There is a lot of climbing- long moderate grinds on the access trails and short steep power climbs on the singletrack. Some steep and tricky descents too.

This place is not as popular as some other Northern Vermont destinations, so the trails get less traffic and are in better condition.

As obnoxious as Vermonters can be with their isolationist attitudes, they do build great trails- and these are some of the best.

Customer Service

You'll want to ride Locomotion, especially the section by the old boiler, Capital Loop, Ghost, Heather Pasture. Indian Trail is a good warm up/cool down.

Solid granite base makes traction incredible. The trails hold up pretty well in wet weather as the area drains well.

The new downhill trail Roller Coaster and part of Rock and Roll are now on the map. The new ride center with food and a bike shop opens late June, and there are several new trails that connect from there into the network.

Go up to the lookouts to see the layout of the area.

You need a current map - it is too tight to follow GPS tracks, and the trail system has changed a lot in the last 3 years.

Follow the colored loops to learn the area, then play around in the area around Capital, Ledges, Link, Rambler/Scrambler etc. for really fun but mostly do-able technical riding. There a few moves in the system that are pretty difficult.

Trail system is great fun and very elaborate. I suggest you follow one of the marked loops (white, blue or red) so you're not constantly checking the map (which is available at the lower trailhead). I did the red loop and found it technical with roots, rocks and twisty turns-everything that makes mountain biking fun.

great riding, awesome trails and tons of stuff to hit. the trails marked easy are snowmobile trails, moderate was fun and fast, but the advanced is where it's at. not too much of it but enough i guess. nice and even some ups and downs, very much like kingdom trails (but a little rougher....and thats good) in that the trails are like a rollercoaster. rippin down then diggin up. i see from previous reviews that the price has gone up to $8, but in my opinion, well worth it. trails are in great shape, not washed out and all beat up.....yet. rode for about 2 hours and a bit over 10 miles and only saw two other riders. some of the landscape is amazing with the old quaries and huge rock piles. HIGHly recommend to everyone i know.

I spent a weekend riding here and will return often. These trails offer any level of rider as much as he/she could want and, from what I understand, new trails will be developed regularly. The tracking is similar to Kingdom Trails (smooth, pine forest) and the trail design is intelligent, imaginative, and, in being linking with dozens of old granite quarries, give the venue a sense of history and beauty. I'm from VT, ride all over VT and say these trails compare with any. If you're from out of the area and are looking for an inexpensive, unforgettable mt bike weekend, call Pierre and make reservations at the Lodge.

These trails are fantastic and they are growing all the time. A good combination of carvey flow and tight technical single track. The views and scenery are amazing (I'm not ussually into that kind of thing). A nice feature is their arrow system. Like the Kingdom trails, there are alot of trail intersections. If you want an advanced ride you just follow the red arrows at all the intersections instead of getting out your map. White arrows mark a shorter less technical loop. They also have a bunch of small loops off the main loop to extend your ride and add technical challenge. Pete has a true passion for trail building and it shows in his work. This is a fun place to ride.
