I rode this because on the moab east map it shows a 2000 vertical decent right off the top. The cow trail is comparable in difficulty to the portal trail without the death exposure. great fun. come prepared for a 4-5 hr ride. The last 2/3 of the ride is gental downhill dirt road. I rode it on a downhill bike and it wasn't to hard of a pedal. this is the perfect moab summer ride because it starts high in the mountains and ends with numerous river crossings.

start at north beaver mesa where the road starts to decend. There is a cow track that turns left off the road and drop 2000 vertical in about 1.5 miles. From there it connects to a dirt road that eventually reconnects with the kokapelle trail (road). gradually decend into onion creek.

26 miles of primarily fire road cruising. 3000 ft vertical drop with one 500ft climb. Ride ends in Onion Creek, with 35 ankle deep stream crossings. Scenic and fun, but not technical at all.

Customer Service

We were camping at Onion Creek and did a shuttle through Castle Valley and up to the north end of the Manti-La Sals.

I was charged by a mother bear with cub in tow on this ride in early summer(not the first bear I have seen in these mountains),so be careful out there.

Couple mile climb from the drop-off pt. Then roaring wide-open moderate drop for a few miles (go as fast as you want-not technical at all) Turn west toward the Mesa overlooks and roar down some mildly rough winding fireroads. The overlooks are stunning! then grind up about a half-mile rising up to a gated pass (I haven't made it up the last switchback yet). From there it is a long ride west on winding, rolling downhill which takes you deep between shear rock walls, which are gorgeous! At the bottom of each roller is the creek (ankle-deep) with small to moderate size rocks making up its bed.
Then stop to fix pinch flats and take in the beauty.

Start out from Moab at mid-afternoon and the early evening sun does spectacular things to the rock walls and spires. Be sure to lube your drivetrain well. The creek is salty. You can make this ride as hard as you want. The best way to take it is fast!! Do the last quarter in the big ring only.
We usually make this our second ride of the day.
