Reds Canyon - TRAIL

Reds Canyon - Trail, Green River, Utah

Ride to loop in a clockwise direction, so you'll start down the McKay Flat road. The first 6 miles are less than visually spectacular, but are a good warm-up. Next is an 8 mile descent (watch out for wild horses) to the base of the distant cliffs. Relatively flat riding in a stream wash for a few miles, then a 10 mile uphill back to your vehicle. The only steep grind is near the very end (of course).

Did this ride in early October, and started at 2pm. Read about it in one of the Falcon Guide books. Lots of water is mandatory, as is some sort of energy source. First few miles were a nice warm up across high country plains. Great views of the Henry Mtns (resemble the La Sals near Moab) for the first half of the ride. Long downhill to the floor of the canyon. On the way down, encountered a group of wild horses (does 4 constitute a herd?) that decided they wanted to race me. Did that for several hundred yards, then they bolted off into the sage. That in itself may have made the ride worth it. Be careful on the descent, watching for loose rocks/gravel: the road has some pretty serious drop-offs on the left side. There are a couple of mines in the canyon, so use common sense if you're gonna take a look. The ride out is a combination of stream wash and surprisingly good dirt road. There is a real grind near the end, and you'll be bumming if you didn't think to put a cold beverage or two in a cooler before you started.

Overall, this ride was okay. I liked the solitude (didn't see another person or vehicle all day) and the experience with the horses. The scenery was fair, but toward the end, it seemed more of a workout ride than somewhere I'd return to.
