Johnson Peak - TRAIL

Johnson Peak - Trail, Possum Kingdom, Texas

the Johnson Peak Trail system totals about 12 or 13 miles of trails. It has 2 trail heads, neither of which is very well marked. However, once on the trail, the trail is VERY well marked. One on the western edge of the trails, next to the BRA campgound, one on the eastern edge of the trails, across Red Bird Land from the Red Bird Trail Trailhead. Roger Wallace, a local resident, has been the only steward of this trail since he started riding out here almost 20 years ago.

It is the Johnson Peak Trail that ranks with Bar H, Tyler and Dinosaur Valley as one of the very best trails in North Texas. I say that because it has challenging singltrack, wonderful views of Possum Kingdom Lake, and the climb to that overlook is 350 feet. This is a must ride trail, if you are a good mountain biker. The fact that it is well marked is just icing on the cake.

Trailheads: EASTERN TH is almost directly across PR 36 from RedBird TH on PK Hike and Bike Trail. The TH is on a dirt berm directly across parking lot from the storage barn. look up in trees for white ribbons. WESTERN TH: across 2951 from BRA use area #4. do not go into BRA Unit #4. The TH is across road 2951. To teh right is a paved road down to boat launch and dock. To the left are gravel roads leading to campsites. Steer left over gravel roads and look for white ribbons and white rocks. they are there!!!!! NOTE: there is a TH inside gate on BSA Camp Constatin property. if you take this TH you will be bitterly disappointed. one way goes to 'eroded trial' and is 1/4+ mile hike-a bike. the other way leads to a oilwell pad and on to an unmaintained ST which will lead you strait thru(not by) cactus groves. great , tuff ,exhausting challenging ST.

great news; this is one of the few trails in
Texas that i have ridden that i would describe as advanced the whole length of trail. there is enuff challenging elevation changes, twists and turns, and rock gardens that only an advanced rider could navigate without dismount. you would need to be a very fit expert rider to ride the spur to the summit of johnson peak w/o dismount or hike-a-bike. but all along the length of trail are short ascents thru rock gardens that will challenge all.

once you are on the trial the makings are excellent. ribbons everywhere. white ribbon and rocks indicate spurs to TH. yellow ribbons and rocks indicate trails that loop around to eventually take you to the summit.

i would say 10-12 miles of trails with possibility to climb up to 800' over if you travel every trail.

1.5 mi. from west to east TH.
