Possum Kingdom - TRAIL

Possum Kingdom - Trail, Possum Kingdom Lake, Texas

New, tight single track through a cedar forest. Trail head is located near a boat ramp in a parking lot on Possum Kingdom Lake (I will post directins later). There are bathrooms and camping spots, picnic tables, and nearby convenience stores and restaurants. The trail is cut up and around a hill with a 300 to 400 foot elevation change. The acreage here is very small so the elevation change is dramatic when riding. At Possum Kingdom, you are either climbing or descending. But what climbs and descends they are!! Not too many roots but lots of rocks and some rock gardens. A trail made for tubeless tires and prefessional-level front forks!! There are two main trails and a lot of spurs off of those trails. The trail is curently being marked with signeage and groomed by CAMBA (http://www.cowtownmtb.org) and friends. This trail offers tight single track with very little room for error at some points. Other sections are screaming downhills that are just short of freefalls. Other sections offer 10 minute climbs. At the top of the hill near the radio tower is a section of boulders that offer a 50 mile view in all directions and 2 different views of Possum Kingdom Lake, including the Hell''s Gate rock formation. This trail is about 20 minutes from Paradise on the Brazos trail system and about 2 hours west of Dallas/Fort Worth. It is rumoured that another trail is being developed nearby. In the evening, herds of deer will come out and graze in the park or off the side of the road. There is one paved road, one fire road, and a power line that cut through the park and trail system. Go to the CAMBA website for some recent reviews, listed under Trail Conditions.

i believe this trail is Johnson Peak Trail. Not to be confused with Possum Kingdom Hike and Bike Trail

This trail has some really nice scenic beauty. The lower part of the trail I was not able to ride, due to recent rains. The base up to the top scenic view I was able to ride. Yes, there are some steep climbs, but nothing an intermmediate rider could not handle. A novice rider I was with was out of breath after two miles due to the almost constant climb at the start.
Bring some meat to BBQ with after the ride.

This is a pretty new trail. If you a driving from Dallas. Go to Northshore or Rowlett Creek Preserve to get your high for the day. This trail on the weekends will be packed with families, and truthfully needs technical work, to become a fulfilling biking adventure. PK is a beautiful place to take in. Take the family, enjoy the wildlife, but its not ready for the advanced Mbiker. My parents live out there so I frequent the area, ket skie the lake and often backpack, absolutly fabulous for the day hike, and even camping up at Johnsons Peak, breathtaking views, but mountain biking... not a good place for this, avid riders will be dissappointed.

I just posted some pictures of Possum Kingdom, the lake and the trail, in the Members Gallery section of this web site. There are 6 or 7 pictures there. I also emailed the MTBReview.com staff in the hopes that they will post a picture on the Possum Kingdom Trail Review web page. Directions: From Mineral Wells, take Hwy 180 west. Take 337 North to 254 West (Left). Take 254 until it forks. Take the left fork. This is Hwy 16 going south. Next on Hwy 16, take a right (west) on Hwy 36 (at the little white bait and tackle shop). Go straight through the crossroads and then take the right fork at at the Hideaway Inn. Take a left onto a dirt road 1.2 miles ahead (directly across from BRA camping area). There is camping, a bathroom, a boat dock, and fishing dock. On the east end of the camping/boat dock area there is a dirt road. To find the singletrack, park at one of the first picnic tables you come to. The trail is cut around the hill with the radio tower on the top of it. The singletrack is off of that dirt road east of the picnic area. You may need to ride around the picnic area a wee bit to find the singletrack... look for some white cloths tied up in the brush. If you get on the wrong trail, you'll know pretty quick because it peters out in a 100 yards or so.

Crews are working on marking this trail but until they finish, ride up the hill until you see the yellow markings and follow that loop.
