Haw Ridge - Trail, Oak Ridge, Tennessee

Haw Ridge - Trail, Oak Ridge, Tennessee

DESCRIPTION

If you want a "rescue trail" while on the road, this is the one: it's for real. Start at the lot, take a right, then take wither Soccer or Lake Road (Rock Garden) into the heart of the trail system. Off of Soccer, Saddle is a nice climb over roots and singletrack, then a sweet descent through singletrack and creekbed. Lake Road is generally a rock garden for @1/4 mile, then turns into a nice little descent into the trail system. You can't really get lost out here, as everything eventually runs either to the Power Cut or to Middle Trail, either of which provide a quick way out. Some nice rides: the Hill Of Truth is a fire road ascent/descent that lives upt to its name. Rainbow is fun, as it has both technical ascents and hairy root-and-leaf descents. Screamer is for the downhill-inclined, and, really, it's hairy enough to make even the toughest think twice. I guess. All in all, if you are passing through and get the chance, ride this place. It's not a half-ass ride!

Rooty, rooty, rooty. Tons of intersections. Better than nothing, but hope there's better stuff around for these folks. Could use some colored route markings to mark out courses of different lengths.

We only had about an hour to ride before dark. The trail wasn't very well marked, luckily a hiker gave us a map. We got caught in the outer loop and encountered some killer climbs and descents. Can't wait to try the lower trails. There is a greenway attached if you want a really casual ride.

There is approximately 32 miles of single track in Haw Ridge Park. There are climbs that are near impossible toward the center of the park on the ridge. However, if you stay on the shore trails the hills are not that tough. There are some technical sections, but most of the park is smooth. The park does not drain well at all so if it has rained there within a couple of days it is best not to ride. There are several trails that have bog bridges to get riders back out there as soon as possible after rain. Haw Ridge Park is the trail system I began on and is the one I ride most often. I never get bored with it and there are always new routes that challenge me.

For a beginner, simply take every right turn. That will keep you by the shore and on the less technical and hilly trails. The whole route is about nine miles. For someone more advanced, get a good map (miniadventureseries.com) and mix it up. One of my favorites is Lake, West Shore, Lake, Twister, Red Shore, Power Cut, Silo, East Shore, Power Cut (Hill of Truth), Criminal, Ridge, Saddle, Soccer.

These trails are nice. Great mix of terrain both smooth and technical. There are some tough climbs but none of them are very long and your always rewarded with sweet downhill runs. I'm going to ride here every time I visit Knoxville. Definitely get a map and make sure you know how to read it. The trails are well marked at the trailheads but they intersect a lot. The intersection are not marked. It's easy to get diverted off to another trail.

I hit this trail system while on the road for work. Great stuff and in good shape. Make sure you do the Silo option. If you can go on Weds in the summer, bring a folding chair, some dogs for the grill and a six of your favorite. The local crew has a happy hour after the ride. Good bunch of folks despite being UT fans.

The longest most diverse system in the area. It offers some pretty crazy "roller coasters" and has a little bit of everything (no big air stuff though). But from a purely single track standpoint I.C. King and Concord are more fun and more scenic.

Haw Ridge Park offers trails for every skill level and plenty of fun on about any route you take. My first time out was the day before a race, so a course had been taped off, guiding riders through most of the best features of the park. You'll find yourself sweetly rewarded on some of the fast, moderately technical downhills after working hard up the steep climbs. On my second try at Haw Ridge, I took the outside loop that overlooks Melton Hill lake for most of the ride. Overall, the trails are fairly fast as long as you can negotiate all the roots. Take a stab at climbing the "Hill of Truth" if you have a chance. The trails are well-maintained and some sections have washboards and cement bag bridges. This is a must-ride for any local cyclist or passer-by. The people I've met on the trail are very nice as well.

Park at the kiosk where you can find a somewhat-useful trail map. If you're a beginner, take an immediate right and follow the lakeside trails. Anything on the interior trails is great for intermediate to advanced riders, but everybody should try them out.

If you haven't ridden Haw Ridge lately then you are missing out. Many new trails have been added to the already extensive trail system. Lots of twisty, technical singletrack, fast downhills and heart-pumping climbs make this place an outstanding place to ride. No need to drive anywhere else if you live or are visiting the Knoxville area. Trail maintenence is outstanding and new trails are being added regularly. don't pass up a chance to ride here!

Customer Service

It's all good especially the new trails along the shore. Rainbow up to the top of K2 down the new trail to Low Gap then up to the top of the Ridge then down Soccer back to the parking lot. Great loop with big climbs and technical downhills!

This is a great trail system with a little something for everybody. Some trails have the feel of Tsali. There are some technical features here and there to keep my interest up. And there are a few ball buster climbs if you want to seek those out. I wish I lived a little closer so I could make this a more regular visit.

I've only ridden the race courses the past couple of years for the 12 Hours of the Hill of Truth. This is one of the most fun racing events you could ever attend. It is what mountain biking is all about.

A couple of hours east to Kingsport will take you to Warrior's Path State Park. There are almost 9 miles of singletrack to challenge your technical abilities.

Haw Ridge offers everything you want in a compact package. You can ride for hours and hit many different trails. Trail maintenance by FOHR is excellent. I can rave on about it, but 40-45 cars an a Wednesday afternoon in Oct is testament to the rideabilty (word?) of this trail. Yeah, the equine factor is present, but not a problem. It rocks.

Customer Service

I take Lake (right off the trailhead bridge) and take West Shore all the way around to Lake again - Twister - West Shore again - Briar Loop to South Shore - Pond Trail - Isthmus to East Shore - then I trail and then whatever the hell enters my mind by then.
