Twin Forks - TRAIL

Twin Forks - Trail, Murfreesboro, Tennessee

Both trails follow the Stones river, and both have a few climbs and many obstacles, roots, rocks, limbs, etc. Don't ride after a recent rain becuase there are low places that will have standing water.

I wasn't impressed. I think the only time to ride here would be after a drought.

Lots of 2 track and singletrack. I rode some of this trail 6 months ago and it was in pretty good shape. It was pretty fast and longer than I could get in in a day. However today it was in terrible condition. This is from horses riding while the trail is muddy. Looks like a thousand horses have been out there in the last few days. The trails are totally trashed. And that's a shame...they have lots of potential and they're really close to my house. I tried to post a couple of photos, but they didn't show up...maybe try searching my profile...that's where I found 'em.

Beyond that, there were plenty of creepy lurker dudes hanging around in their cars and at the trailheads today. Actually both times I've ridden this trail there was an abundance of creepy lurker dudes.

This trail used to be more or less uninhabited, but I guess the secret's out...especially with the horse crowd.

Similar Products Used: There are other trails on the other side of the river. Most of what I found was 2 track, but I was on a heavy motorcycle and didn't get into any of the singletrack.

I have yet to ride this trail without encountering a horse. the trail is rough from the horses and does not flow well. it is the closest thing to home so i ride it for a post work work out. its only about 3 miles. the road to get their never dead ends by the way. just take the right at the sign that says "East Fork Recreation Area". this trail is primarily for horses so move for them. we are currently working on making 'bike only' trails that will involve some intense rock gardens, quick down hills, log rides, and dirt jumps. if you live outside of murfreesboro or nashville, its not really worth your time to drive. give it about a year from this post and it should be a great place.

There are several trail heads for this area, but soem are not recommended becuase of either low spots with standing water, or becuase of briar trees that could easily trash both tires........If you start from the parking lot, the ride is fun, not quite as exciting as Lock 4 around Gallatin, but this is the best trail around Murfreesboro. The only other place in Murfreesboro south of Nashville is the River Walk in Murfreesboro, yet that is a paved greenway. Twin Forks has not been maintained really well in the past, but they just recently cleared it out and it is a pretty fun workout.

Customer Service

Start from the parking lot as already described.

Going right from the parking lot, you'll encounter quite a bit of standing water a few miles in to the ride. After crossing a bit of tributary, the ride becomes a bit of a bear in the summer. There's standing water that can be pretty deep, but the cane on either side is too dense to navigate through. Be careful of horse riders on the trail, we encountered a few groups. The trail's certainly got potential, but in the summer, in it's current state, can make for a long ride/slog through mud and muck. Also, be very careful about poison ivy/oak/whatever. Tec-nu is a great soap to get rid of the irritants.

A little bit of maintenance;attention;perhaps more usage would really make this a nice trail in an otherwise bland area. There's other put-in points such as Walter Hill. The topography changes quite a bit from open/flat areas to nicely wooded; somewhat rocky; varying topography areas.

Customer Service

From the parking lot; the trail that leads to the left is a fun, short loop.

I am glad this trail is here. It is convenient for those in Rutherford county. It's enough to give you a little mid-week, after work workout. I encourage you to check this out and keep coming back so this trail can stay broken in. This is not a techncal haven, but you can play on the rocks if you like for humor. I also went over to the pump station and came down the steps (very steep, narrow, and pretty scary). The trail to the right is flat and boring, but undoubtedly goes for miles and miles, eventually hooking up with the Walter Hill Dam area. It may be worth your while to go to the dam and check out some of the trails here. There is a pretty killer, long downhill on the opposite side of the bridge.

This trail was a disappointment. If you can go anywhere else go there. The small loop to the left when your facing the boat ramp offers some nice views but is not much more than a walk in the park. When you get onto the actual trail it gets worse. Not a good trail at all really.

Customer Service

leave the parking lot go right approx. 1/2 mile. Turn right off road onto old logging road then continue bearing right back to parking lot via along the trail.

All light-technical single track with some gullies to drop into and climb out of(bypasses available), some technical climbs and a choice to do some technical trials over rock outcroppings, a couple of creek crossings but, these may be dry to running, depending on recent weather.
WATCH OUT FOR, AND BE RESPECTFUL TO, HORSE RIDERS. THEY CUT AND MAINTAIN THESE TRAILS AND THEIR HORSES ARE USUALLY SPOOKED BY BIKES. If you see horses, slow down, pull off the trail if they are coming toward you or, approach slowly if you catch up to them, and speak to the riders. They have always been kind to us and don't mind sharing their trails. And as always, respect the trails.

Customer Service

This trail can begin at Walter Hill Dam and end at Nice Mill Dam(apprx. 18 mi.), with other starting points along the way for shorter rides.

From Dam: straight into some short climbs, I'd suggest staying left at each split (right will give you some harder stuff). You can go as long and as fast as you want, eventually ends up at East Fork boat ramp. 1 stream crossing about 2 feet deep.

From Boat Ramp, (facing ramp) go right.. very fast with some slight climbs. when you pop out onto 2 track road, go left, then take very next left. trail will start again at fence line to the left. (stack of rocks). Can go all the way to Walter hill. Good place to stage 2 cars.

Only place in the boro but fast and fun when not too wet. any rain will make this really muddy. Watch for the occasional horse... Can be easy going slow or a little technical if hauling a**..

Customer Service

As other people indicated, there are several starting points. If it hasn't rained (at all) for a week, start at Walter Hill Dam. HWY 231 from M'boro. Park in small area to the left before you get to main dam parking. Trailhead is right there.
If it has rained but not for several days goto the East Fork Boat Ramp.. It's the first road on the left coming from the Boro on 231. Right before the Walter HIll bridge. Follow signs to boat ramp.
