Time for an update-

Since the last review there have been alot of changes to the ETSU trail system area. We still have the 5.5 miles of xc but there have been a few re-routes, and a few in the making, that will make it flow better than before. The downhill course has had a make over as well. We have added a pump track, classic slalom, and dirt jumps in the same area as the regular Slalom course is at. You can't miss it. The old freeride trail is also in the course of being revamped. If you would like any information you can contact me at zgef1@goldmail.etsu.edu. Come out and ride whenever! or Give me a shout and we'll get out there and show you around. Cheers!

ETSU hosts a Dual, Dual Slalom, Downhill, Freeride and XC trail. The ETSU Cycling Club maintains the trail system year round so they are in decent shape. Around Labor Day weekend they host a large collegiate race and the trails are marked and cleared so it is the best time to go if you are not familiar with the trails.
The slalom courses are among the best in the nation and are modified and/ or completely rebuilt every year. Very fast course with big, but rollable, jumps. The downhill is a short 2 minute romp through the woods with some rocks roots and jumps thrown in. The freeride trail is located behind the slalom course beside the railroad tracks. The hightlight include the cave drop, RR hip jump and the V-drop.
The XC trail is the foundation and was extended in 1999 and again in 2001 to measure close to 4.5 miles. Almost all single track and in the woods, the trail does cross the road twice and finding where to pick it up can be difficult. Again come during Labor Day weekend and learn where they go!

Customer Service

From the parking lot start up the hil towards Buc Ridge Apartmanets. Follow the signs until you reach Southwest Ave. Cross the road and at the left end of the parking lot the trail resumes. Follow the signs until you come back out at the road. Cross to the side you started on and at the first dumpster on the left cut upthrough the field. The trail ends at the parking lot. For a different feel ride backwards.

I am a gravity racer, but this place has everything I need! This is the best urban trail system I have been on, it is literally right on campus. The Dual and Dual Slalom courses get reworked at least once per year by ETSU Cycling and are consistantly the best in the nation at over 400 yards. The DH is minimal, but works me technically and physically and the XC course is viscious at 4.8 miles. Keep your head up b/c all the trails are built for advanced riders, but beginners can ride most!

Customer Service

The trail is located on both sides of Southwest Ave. Park beside the RR tracks and head across the road towards student apartments. Take left after first driveway on left and follow until finishes back at the southwest, cross street and turn left along road take switch-back to the right and your back in it. Suggestion is to ride with someone who knows the course or come out during a race weekend (Usually Labor Day weekend) when the course is well marked.

A great dual course with a large step up jump that is very fast and fun. A very good spectators course also. This place also has a single track downhill course that has a five foot drop, rock gardens, woops, little jumps and drops, and also a cool log section. We recently began a free ride course, close to the dual course, with the most killer drop in the whole area that is a 6 footer with a 3 foot gap off the top of a cave with a smooth landing that is beautiful. Cross country trails go around and over the road with a couple cool short downhills.

Customer Service

Same as above, to get to the new free ride it is easy to go to the bottom of the dual course and go left along the rail road up the hill a little and you,ll see a killer drop on the left, (over a cave!) ,and a little one to the right

Bring a stopwatch and see how fast you can get 10 laps done. If someone else is there it aint worth riding because you'll see the guy 50 times and probably crash into him at least twice. A real challenge is trying to keep the bike upright when the trail is damp.

This trail has evolved into a nice 4.5 mile singletrack course thanks to alot of help by the NTMBA and ETSU cycling clubs. A great venue for races with XC,DS,and DH on site. The singletrack is fast and tight and will make you hurt if you attack it. Technical enough to challenge beginners and demand respect from advanced riders (or it will bite you).
Bottom line: great singletrack and fun to ride.

Customer Service

Start at the parking lot on right just past the railroad bridge. Ride towards WETS radio station and veer left onto trail just before entering WETS driveway. Follow trail in clockwise direction.

The ETSU Cycling Club has recently expanded the XC trail to 5.5 miles on pure on the wood singletrack. Tight, fast, and busy is the word so check it out next time you are in Johnson City.
Don't miss the killer DH course as well as the World Class Dual Slalom.

NTMBA (The Northeast TN Mtn Bike Assoc) will be hosting the 2nd annual Greystoke Subaru Rollin at The Ridge XC, DS, and DH race July 13-14. Norba and TORBA points race. Check it out at www.NTMBA.org.
