Bear Mountain - Trail, Custer, Dakota

Bear Mountain - Trail, Custer, Dakota

DESCRIPTION

The first 3/4 miles is pretty flat. After that it is a tough climb for almost 2.5 miles. You gain about 1000ft in 2 miles. When you get to the top you can follow a few different trails. If you go up in the summer (Late May to August) ask the fire ranger in the tower how to get to Grand Vista. After you get to the top it is pretty easy though. It takes me about 1hour 15 minutes to 2 hours to get up depending on who I'm riding with. Then about 10 minutes to get down. The picture is of Bear Mountain from the top of Medicine Mountain.

Cross Country Rider

I have ridden this trail in 2 sections. I rode north section a year ago and this section has more single track. Some difficult climbs and good singletrack.
This year we rode south from the boy scout camp. As the previous post indicated, it travels slowly for 0.5 miles and then turns abrubtly uphill for 2 miles up to the ranger station. Talk to "Doc" there in season. There has been some logging so the next mile is not well understood. Descend until a chance to go to grand vista in - 1 mile. Beautiful views there. The entire trail is cross country ski trail and this is important in remembering in rating this trail. Very little single track. Great views though. A different ride that should be approached as such.
