Croft State Park - TRAIL

Croft State Park - Trail, Spartanburg, Carolina

Starting from the parking area this somewhat challenging trail has something for just about everyone. There is enough climbing, fast down hills, and hard packed sections, which allow fairly high speeds to satisfy the intermediates and experts, but may be too much for beginners. Several connector trails provide variation and new challenges, especially the Idaho pass, which is more technical. It has two 15 ft gulleys that will leave you eatin dirt if your not careful! You will ride alongside and cross some scenic creeks, and through forested areas, which provide shade from the summer sun. Watch out for wildlife in this area, especially squirrels, turkey and deer. Be aware that after a rain there can be some mud and slippery sections.

Rode this trail on the way south after riding Pisgah area. This could be a really nice trail with some trail maintenance. We rode after a week of heavy rains and there were lots of washed out areas and lots of muddy sections but fun all in all.

Rode here for the first time yesterday and it was a really bad experience. I strongly disagree that you can't get lost here. I lost the Southside Loop trail with only 30 mins. of daylight left and finally had to backtrack but didn't make it out before dark. Partially my own stupidity for not allowing myself more time in unfamiliar territory but I will say this: Don't think it can't happen to you. They do not use paint on the trees to mark the trails but small, square, metal signs. It would be ok if they were consistently placed every 1/8 mile or so but you can ride quite a long time and not see any. This doesn't work well when there's millions of leaves and the trail itself has not been traveled enough to visibly see it in a lot of places. (I never saw one soul on any trails the entire TWO HOURS I was there on a Friday afternoon).

The trails were a definite change of pace from what I'm used to which is more steep climbs and fast descents. I would say they are more tight and technical, lots of switchbacks, some pretty gnarly roots and rocks but some easy sections too.

I can't really recommend a route as I'm not very familiar with all of the trails. I rode Southside Loop, Centerline, High and Dry and Flat Pass. Just make sure whatever route you take that you give yourself plenty of daylight hours to get back to your car if you get turned around or lose the trail.

Great trail with something for everyone. I would say this trail system is more for the intermediate and not so much the beginner. I recently came from central Texas temporarily and really enjoyed the difference in the trail system. Back home, the trails a slower and rocky where as this trail is full of climbs and small downhills which you can really gain some speed on. Roots and techy stuff everywhere. Make sure to download or pick up a map as there are a few forks that are not marked and found myself pulling out my map. Great maintained trail.

I love this trail, like a runaway roller coaster. Not a ton elevation change like pisgah or duponte but plenty of ups and downs to get some nice speed going. Very sloped and curvy and well maintained. A few technical spots but mostly just an enjoyable ride with many trail options for the size.

This trail rocks. It has a 12-13 mile loop that is absolutely perfect cross country. It is very fast and flowing with tight trees and a couple short moderately technical climbs. There are also some cool ravines that you can dive down into and climb back out of. Not much freeride but the cross country is top notch. We met up with a couple local riders who showed us the best loop. The maps posted on the trails are the best.

Customer Service

start with a clockwise loop on Southside from the parking lot. Hang a right onto centerline and a quick left to lizard. Once you get back to Southside go around the horn and back down towards the river on Idaho and up Outlaw. Head back to the parking lot.

First time riding this trail. Found it to be well taken care of, actually met some of the UMBA guys working on it out there. A strip map is available at trail head, which is pretty accurate. Trail was fast, no hard climbs but enough small to medium ones close together to help get you breathing hard. Nice scenery near the river. Good trail, will ride again when back in the area. Open to bikers all week. their may be a few horses their - remember get off the bike and be friendly. I met some hikers, very nice group.

Use the map, their are many routes you can make using the south loop and the outer loop along with many off shot trails. All are marked

We got to the trail kind of late in the day which isn't good if you don't know the trail. we went right after we left the parking lot, but everyone else was going opposite us, so I am guessing to go left on the loop is the most desirable route. Watch for the little side trails, they will really get you turned around. we ended up riding for about and hour in the dark and are 99% sure someone was following us which was really freaky! When we got to the car we saw a flashlight coming through the woods towards us so we hauled a-- pretty quick!! Other then that this trail is really awesome. Some technical stuff, lots of speed and quick windy trails. Just give yourself plenty of daylight!!
