Modoc - Trail, Modoc, Carolina

DESCRIPTION

An in and out trail at this time. Around 12 miles total. Technical in places with many quick uphills, downhills, dips and creek crossings. Will work you if you push. Not for a beginner rider. This is one of the more challenging rides in the area. If the bridges are wet, WALK THEM. Very slick. If you ride it, give it a review here so the volunteers who work on it can see what you think.

This is written from an "Advanced Beginners" perspective, too many of these reviews seem to be written by "third ring all the time" types. MTBing seems to be like golf, kind of like me taking Tiger Woods advice on how good a golf course is. SO, if you are sport or expert class, take it with a grain of salt...This is a tough trail for a beginner, lots of dismount if you aren't technically proficient. If the trail is wet, it takes on a whole new meaning, lots of side hill lies with slick roots and the trail turns snotty real fast. Not as well traveled as some of the other trails in the area, but once you've ridden it, it will soon become one of your favorites, cuz it kicks your butt, but in a nice way, always makes you want to come back.WIsh they had a "The End" sign. it just kind of dies out.

In and out, only one way to go, unless you go to the access point 2/3 of the way down, why would you???

FATS is the local favorite, for good reason, but this trail is great, and I like Keg Creek as an alternative. Widely varied terrain.

Good trail, technical in parts. The description of the trail from MTB.com says the trail can be slick, believe it! There are a lot of roots, some of them need to be ridden around rather than over because they are slick. A lot of the ditch crossings are over rocks and are very slick as well (I hope over time maybe some of these will get bridges). The trail runs along Stephen's Creek for a good ways, and it is a nice view although it is a big drop from the trail down to the creek.

This is my new favorite trail. It's a good mix of challenge, scenery and fun. Seems to be a little less challenging than Wine Creek with it's creek crossings and rocks, but more challenging than the Hickory Knob/Bartram/Lick Fork routes. It's also one of the most straight-forward to get to, since the trailhead is right off Hwy. 23.

Its been a couple of years since I've rode this trail, but the creek crossings are still as challenging as I remember. Today the weather was perfect with the majority of the leaves on the ground. The view was prodigious from one ridge to the next with Stevens Creek far below. The trail is in very good shape with only a few huge pines down about 4 miles into the ride. Stopped at the painted tree property marking at about the 5.5 mile marker. The trail looks like it goes on but it was a bit over grown and getting late in the day. Next time I'll be prepared for the journey. This trail is well worth the ride from Columbia. Great job SORBA-CSRA...excellent

One of the best trails in the area. Offers a good challenge and certain test your mountain biking skills. Good work out and a nice 12+ mile afternoon ride. Watch for the creek crossings and rocks!

I use to live in Augusta Ga and asked a local bike shop of some trails in the area and he gave me a map for modoc, man is this a great trail. I live in Atlanta and the trail there is nothing like this. This trail is definetly for inter-advanced. And its a great workout. I only rode 6-7 miles deep because I didnt know how far it goes, and I was by myself so if I got hurt it would have been on hell of a crawl out!! Great trail, I recommend everyone in the augusta GA area to check it out!

I rode this trail for the first time yesterday, and was impressed with how well maintained it was. It was mildly technichal with a large number of challenging roots in the path and a few tricky "crick" crossings, but some of the climbs don't seem like they ever want to end on the way out. If you want to get some burn in you legs and enjoy a pretty ride I would reccommend it, but don't go in if you're not up to a challenge.

I would reccommend the Augusta Canal trail to riders in the area, it is easy to access from the Canal Bike path, by following the RR tracksat the pump station.

Not much to say except this trail is one of the best...if not the best...that I have ever set foot in. It has everything to offer...however, not for the weak-hearted!!! If you have been riding a while and feel a little saucy...check it out.
And to the group that keeps this trail going.....fantastic job!!!! A+++

I rode this trail during a rain storm and even though the track was saturated it was still fast. I don't fall often and I consider myself a good technical rider, but this wet bad boy threw me down again and again. I loved it. Short climbs reward fast downhills that taper into the flats so you can keep a brisk pace with out a dreaded climb at the end of every burst. I can't recomend much to the people who work on this trail except to make it longer. Thanks.

I rode this trail for the first time last week. I have been riding for several years and would consider myself a fairly good rider. I worked a grave shift the night before then drove two hours to ride this trail. I fell more times on this one ride than I have the whole year. The trail is fast with plenty of rocky creek crossings. I would like to see some more jumps and logs to cross. I was tired as hell when I got done and loved every second of it. Not for beginers. Great job guys.
