This is not a destination serious mtb'ers would seek for an epic ride. It's flat and unchallenging. I think it's strength is as an additional activity if you are already visiting the island for other reasons. It's a very scenic, casual, peaceful ride - something you would take your kids on. If I were there on vacation I'd bring my bike for morning rides just to get the heart pumping. I rated it a 3 because it's such a scenic, peaceful area (at least in January it's peaceful).

I have been traveling to Hunting Island for several years and stayting at the campground just to ride. This is one of my favorite places to ride as the scenary is beautiful as you pass through barrier island forests that are becoming a thing of the past. If you visit, try out the trail that starts just before you reach the park office and ends at the trail leading to the fishing pier. This trail was abandoned but was opened up by a local rider on his own time over the last year. This trail is quite the challenge and is much more technical than any other on the island. It snakes up and down the old dune lines and has some short but steep climbs. Length is approx 3 miles and runs the front of the island and is very close to the highway in spots.

Customer Service

Begin on trail from campground and travel the length of the island. Don't miss riding the trail that runs the length of the lagoon. The lagoon area is where the Vietnam scenes in Forrest Gump were filmed so check out the movie to see what the area looks like.

This is the first time I had ever been out to Hunting Island. The sad part, is the fact that I've lived in Beaufort for about 1.5 years and about a 1 before that before a deployment. The park itself, I think is beautiful. I'm from Florida and you don't see parks like this anywhere down there. VERY well maintained with Park Rangers and Custodians. The trails are clearly marked and easy to find. I think i started off the wrong way because I hit sand almost right away. I have a 2.5 tire so i made it a good way before i had to walk a little. Once you get into the actual trees, the ride is nice and scenic. Its mostly singletrack with a little doubletrack and a couple ups and downs and small downhill sections. The strait aways are clear and speed addicting. Not much for jumps though. I tried a couple times to get enough speed to get even 2 ft off the ground but it didn't happen. This is a good workout and the amount of trails available are numerous if you decide to get off the main trails for a while. Nice and cool during the winter but I bet it is bug infested during warm weather. Overall its a great ride. I went on a Friday and I was the only one there ALL morning. GREAT view of the beach from the parking lot.

Customer Service

Take Hwy 21 via Beaufort past lady's island, and st helen island. Once you pass the second moving bridge, wait until you see the sign enterance to the park. You'll have to pay about $4 for the load but its well worth it. Go on to parking lot and unload. From there, choose your destiny.

Nice change up from the mountains of TN. Liked learning to trudge through the sand. You can get some serious speed up on those straight aways. Quiet, don't remember running across anyone else riding any of the days I was there. Beach a fab plus to visit after!

There is a one mile trail between the campground and the park which offers some mild technical riding . The main trail is about 6 miles and is good for beginners. Nice place to ride the beach. Bring the bug spray!!!!!

Customer Service

Maps are available at the entry to the park. The beginning of the trail is a little difficult to find the key is to look for the lagoon.

When i used to live on Hilton Head i was one of the first group of people who ever rode at hunting (5+ years ago) it still amazes me that since that time people still haven't found our hidden cache of good trails. there is one main trail that previous reviewers have obviously missed. About 5 miles long mostly rolling with some steep power climbs. There are a couple of technical ups and dropoffs too. The trail follows a ridge of dunes near the main road. Hunting is a great place to work on leg speed and flow through the twisties. Probally about 1.5 hours worth of good riding before you feel like going home.

Customer Service

park at the fishing pier and explore the first trail on your left, you have to go by the recently moved houses, because people can never find this trail it will be kind of hard to follw the route but it's worth it.

This trail mixes the Lowcountry with the most extreme terrain you will find in Beaufort County. With that said, It is a great trail for beginner's as well as seasoned vetrean's looking for something differnt. The fast level trails provide a fun workout while at the same time allowing the rider to feel like he/she is right at home on a Scooby-Doo Mystery. Cob-webs are free, along with steriod slaming "no-see-ums". A must for anyone who considers there home turf hardcore. There's no high like inhaling a "Skeeter" on a nice hardpack single track! Take lot's of water, and never forget to
have ample amounts of Benedryl waiting in the rig.
P.S. Don't forget the Six pack of "Tall Boys" And a half pound of Boiled peanuts for the scenic ride to wherever you're heading!

This trail is great, you will find deep soft sand, hard-pack, grass, crushed oyster-bed, and even mud. It has some tite single-track and some doubles. The trail was first ridden (made) in the late 80's for fire-brakes, since then the local MTB's have carved thier own trails.

I grew up in Beaufort, this is really the only semi-tech trail around. Great for beginners-to-advanced riders.

By the way, the first "groups" to ride were in '92/93. My "buds" and I used to hit this one twice a week.

Customer Service

You can park in the Camp Grounds or on the side of the highway, at the Fishing pier, and at the scenic stops, there are entrances all over the place. They will connect you to the main trail eventually.
