FATS - GREAT WALL LOOP - TRAIL

FATS - GREAT WALL LOOP - Trail, Clarks Hill, Carolina

Mostly machine built singletrack with a 1600'' hand built section that is tight and technical. Machine built stuff is singling up nicely as we live in a greenhouse down here in South Carolina. Many, many dips and jumping opps coming out of these dips. Also several rock gardens made of loose native stones that add challenge and keep your out of the wet stuff. Generally, the loop is very fast with the occasional tech feature thrown in for variety. The loop is named for a 108'' section of rock that has been placed on the bench cut in an area that had a bad seep. This loop is fast and fun, with a little bit of climbing at the end no matter which direction you ride it. It''s good in either direction.

Great Wall is a great workout.
It has great downhills and plenty of woops to get air on.
Nothing too technical about it.
Either direction is fast and fun, and has a big climb out. This is where the riders with strong legs and big lungs leave the pesky riders who've been tailing em on the rest of the trail.
This trail isn't as popular as Brown Wave and Skinny.

This was my favorite at FATS. This weekend was my first trip to FATS and I loved every minute of it. Previous posters were correct, this is not technical riding and there were no serious climbs. What the trails were was FUN. flowing, jumps, turns, beautiful use of the terrain, etc.. lots of wildlife, nice scenery. Damn - wish i lived closer.

Great Wall was the funnest of the group. Appreciate it for what is is and a special THANKS to the folks who built it and take care of it...

This trail is very fast, very easy and very fun. However... not technical at all... my girlfriend who's never rode more than 7 miles here in the upstate rode 20 on our first visit to this trail (we did Brown Wave and Great Wall) .... The "dangerous" section is a joke.... Yes, it's a double that you could hurt yourself on, but most people aren't going to even attempt it. I've seen much worse on most other trails I've rode.

Although this trail is fast and fun, riding here will in no way condition you for racing. Most of the race courses in the southeast are night and day more technical, with much steeper climbs and significantly more trail obstacles.

Overall it's a great play ride, good for beginners and people that just need to crank out some miles.

Customer Service

Brown wave was really good CCW, Great wall would have been better CW...

FAST FAST FAST ! If you like going fast down hill , you will love this trail ! My average speed was between 30--35 ! Lota air ! This trail had less mud holes than the other FATS trails . Whoever built the FATS trails used the sustainable formula percentages perfectly on Great Wall . Very Fun Fast with lots of sharpe turns , Awesome trail . One problem is that Fats is getting so crowded now , you have to be on the lookout for riders coming in your direction . Had some very close calls at fast down hill speeds on Great Wall . This trail will need to go "odd--even" days directional at some point to keep from someone like myself from getting hurt real bad !

Customer Service

Ride this trail counter-clock wise . Faster this way with a nice up hill burn at the end .Make sure to check your bike for lose screws before you ride this trail .

Great trail with the most variety of the FATS trail. Fun whoops, jumps and dips. Several short steep climbs. My 3rd favorite behind Brown Wave and Deep step in that order

Definately some of the best trails I've ridden! I'd put these up there with Pisgah, NC in level of fun, just different. You should enjoy air time to really enjoy these trails, as they all have opportunity for spills if you're timid about leaving the ground. I rode them all (over 20 miles) simply because I couldn't stop myself. They are all off of a short connector trail from the parking lot, so I went back to the truck after each loop to get more water and GUs. A 70oz CamelBak is more than enough. I saw lots of folks on single speeds. The little amount of climbing is easy. NOT beginner trails! Ride safe and within your ability.

Customer Service

ALL. My "Difficulty" ratings are 3s because I don't feel they're difficult at all for the average athletic rider. That's not to say I wasn't completely beat up by the end, I was, but that was from the way we attacked the trails. Overall rating is a 5 because they were a blast! Very clean, fast rolling trails. I'll be a regular there.

Just got back from riding up around Augusta, GA area. Yesterday, rode the 3 FATS trails. About 22 miles of riding. I rode all of them cw and started with brown wave then skinny and last the great wall. It's the most fun I've had on a bike in a long time! I really enjoy riding but the brown wave was a blast! I took it kind of easy on all the trails because I don't like to bomb a new trail....I usually end up getting hurt. I will definitly make the 3 hour drive up here to do them again!

Customer Service

I suggest actually starting with either The Brown wave either direction then hitting The Great Wall CCW then save Skinny for last. It's been a while since I've ridden more than 12 miles consecutively on a mountain bike...about 4 years. The Great Wall hit me at the very end. I was kind of mad that I cramped up about 50 feet from the end of it.....had no idea....lol. I wasn't planning on riding all three of them one right after the other also, but they were a blast.

This trail is really well designed and constructed. Tons of rollers and dips that have big air potential. At times it feels like a pump track. Very little climbing as this trail takes advantage of the terrain and flows very well so you don't use your brakes a lot either. Rode the trail in a counterclock wise direction and it was a blast. Well worth the 3 hour drive from Atlanta.
