Garocii Quarry Switchback Trail - TRAIL

Garocii Quarry Switchback Trail - Trail, Ridgway, Pennsylvania

Founded by Dave Love, the owner of Love’s Canoe in Ridgeway, it is a shining example of the ideal mountain bike ride. If stout climbs and sweet singletrack are what you crave, then this is the honey pot. The ridge-top singletrack passes an optional but worthy spur trail that drops down through massive sandstone boulders. These monolithic rocks litter the hillside, forming small caves and interesting climbing problems. The trail meanders by the man-made quarry and ancient steam engine. The engine was used to lower the quarried rock to the stone crusher found at the bottom of the hill. Oak trees now grow through the old steam engine, making it a permanent fixture atop the quarry. The question is, how did they get that colossal beast up there? Highlights: the historic ruins of the Garocii Stone Quarry and Stone Crusher, Little Toby Rail-Trail, 2 miles of the area's best switchback singletrack, bouldering on massive boulders, exploring mini-caves between the massive blocks, great wildlife viewing. Tread: the perfect blend of great singletrack and fire roads. The singletrack sections are mostly hardpacked, with the occasional rock.

This trial is listed in Pa. Mt. Bike trails (Falcon Publishing) and has excellent potential, if you can follow the actual trail. After ascending the initial climb, we gave up looking for the turn off. Too many ways to go in an unfamiliar area to get lost. Tried to reverse the trail going up the switchback and had success there, but by the time we reached the top, we were wiped and went back the way we came, this was 4-5yrs ago. Maybe there are better maps??

Trailhead was easy to find, not much else though.
