Nockamixion - Trail, Ottsville, Pennsylvania

DESCRIPTION

Varying degrees, it is as hard as you want it to be. Many logs to jump, great uphills and downhills. some little ravines to jump. during the spring the horse riders really chop it up, but otherwise it is the best around

Just as the review before, I am also Clydesdale and I loved these trails, all of them. Rolling, winding, nice creek crossings and little climbing- perfect - Great work by the ridenox gang.
Watch out for the slick spots on some of the stone made creek crossings

Great ride for a an old clydesdale like myself ( no big hills to climb ). As advised went when dry and loved the dirt packed roller coaster ride, fast and fun. This was my first time and can't wait to go again. Great job on building the trails.

Customer Service

Didn't do the southend as one of the riders told me it was wet and rocky , not a good combination.

Previous trail reports spot on. XC trail, the harder you pedal, the faster you go. you get out of it what you put into it. Much like riding Belmont Plateau without the log hops.

One hour drive from Philly. Do two laps at Nock. Drive another 20 minutes to Alexandria, NJ and do pumptrack laps until you puke. = Good ride.

The east side of the Eastern Woods trail did seem to have the worst drainage problems and I would avoid it in the future.

A+, would ride again

First off let me say that the trail builders have done a great job - very well constructed and thought out. I do agree with the reviewer that they got a bit crazy with all the turns. It was completely dry when I rode it. IMHO the most important thing to realize before going here is that this is truly a XC trail - dont expect any jumps, big downhills, rock gardens, or going fast. Very tight winding singletrack but very nontechnical. Totally not my type of ride as I prefer a fast fun technical all mountain trail. For me a uninspiring, rather dull ride. I gave 4 stars because for those people who are into XC and want some nice scenery (especially through the pine forest sections) it would be an amazing trail. Most people I saw on trail were pounding out multiple 7.3mi laps and asked if I needed help when I was enjoying a Clif bar sitting on a rock on the side of the trail. Guess I should have brought shots so I wouldn't have to stop and screw up my lap time!

Customer Service

Just keep turning right and it will keep you on both loops. The only time you ever turn left is when you get dumped out on the gravel access road for about 20 yards and then right again onto the trail.

I rode Nockamixon on Friday after work for the first time. The scenery is the best I've ever seen in PA (mountain biking, that is). Also, the penalty for going slightly off trail in a few areas is pretty horrific (that's actually a good thing, for me at least, makes the ride interesting).

The bad parts? I don't understand why the trail builders went hog-wild with some of the zig-zagging. There's one section that is literally a back and forth about five or six times through an open field.... with the straights being maybe 50 feet long. I don't understand why they didn't just cut straight through the field.

The REALLY bad part is the fact that at least 25% of the trail on the southern loop is a drainage nightmare. I understand that we had some pretty bad weather the day before, but it's pretty clear that the issue in those sections of trails is drainage. In my opinion, some of those sections should be closed or re-routed, as I was cringing as I pedaled through them (some of them several hundred feet long swamps, with tons of rutted sloppy tracks in them).

Finally, the stream crossings (low water bridges, not talking about the simple drainage crossings), while well built and otherwise really nice, are flat out dangerous to ride across. I attempted the first one and learned the hard way that they were super slick. Not much you can do, but get off and walk across (which is possible while staying dry).

Overall, a really great effort.... But I will not go back unless there's been a week of hot/dry weather, because the trail damage that I personally did was pretty awful. Had I known that it was just going to keep getting worse, I would've turned around (I rode counter clockwise as suggest on the VMB site).

Thumbs up for all the work that's been done. If it hadn't been for the mud, it would've been a great ride.

Customer Service

Start at the parking lot at Fink and Tower Roads.

The trail starts out right there at the back left corner of the lot. There is a "north" and "south" loop. The north is technically very simple and mostly dry. The south is significantly more technical (although still not approaching French Creek / Bear Creek levels), and WAY wetter. I rode both, and my GPS told me I road about 7.4 miles. Hopefully I'm wrong about the drainage issue, but rider beware.
