Michaux - Pine Grove Furnace - Trail, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Michaux - Pine Grove Furnace - Trail, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

DESCRIPTION

Rough. Three races are held here every year(at Michuax) and expert riders fell that this is the toughest x-country race in the nation! So, the trails are rocky. If you chose to ride the race courses, all trails are rated as most difficult, and they are. This trail system is set up for ATVers, so the "easy" trails are less murderous. RIDE HERE IF YOU YOU LIKE IT ROUGH!

Montour Woods Conservation Area off Hassam Rd near the Montour Trail in Coraopolis. 5 miles of new single track built in summer 2013 connects with a couple more miles of dirt bike trails near the old Nike site. Steep climbs, hairpin switchbacks and flowy new bench cut downhill sections. Download maps from Hollowoak.org. Lots of potential here for more trails.

If you are from out of town, like my friends and I, one of the hardest parts of this ride is not knowing where you are most of the time. I must be illegal in PA to post decent trail markers of have trail maps. That being said...

A fun and techical downhill run...a bunch of rocks etc. It levels out a bit with only one real hard climb on the route we took. But then again, I have no idea what route we took but do the lack of maps and trail signs.

If you ride a 29er, I think you'll really enjoy this trail.

Customer Service

While I can't recommend a route, I will pass along one peice of advice. When you are leaving the parking lot there is trail head to the left and right of the fire service road. Both eventually cross power lines. If you take the trail on the right..STOP AT THE POWER LINES!!! If you come to a group of rock statues...look at them, take a pic, make your own and then turn around and back the other way as the rocks that follow are out of hand and not rideable.

The trail on the left seems to be the main trail, but again, it was not on any map we could get and was poorly marked

Given that I learned to ride in Utah, this trail is not as difficult as others make it out to be. Sure, it is rocky and has some technical sections, but I have not encountered anything that is not passable. Nothing I have ridden in Moab is any less challenging and is usually much more difficult. Overall, this is a good ride, with lots of options to allow you to make the ride as long and/or difficult as you want.

Customer Service

Whichever way your destiny takes you. I've done rides in as little as an hour or as long as four hours.

We camped at Pine Grove Furnace Park and rode from camp Sunday morning. We did like a 2-1/2 ride. It starts with road up, real rocky at the top and then gets real nice and smooth towards the bottom. AWESOME RIDE. We rode the other side of Rt 233 on Sat. See my review on that trail.

Customer Service

GET MAP AT OFFICE. Start on Bendersville Rd. up hill to warm up. It's a nice climb. At top, make right on ATV trail (#41) at top. These are very rocky trails. We tried to follow trail #35 and #33 but signs are sparce and confusing. Look for #32 and take the short switchback up to the top of a nice knob which has awesome views and trails as well. It's pretty much all down from here and awesome sweeping turns with nice high berms. It's REAL nice and a little smoother and faster. What a great ending to a great ride!!!

This place is rough. It's easiest trails are best suited for experienced riders. This is the toughest place I have ever ridden. No real climbs (except for a two mile fire road) just rough, rugged, beat the crap out of you constantly terrain. I would not do this on an ATV!

Customer Service

Pine Grove Furnace parking lot: Get trail map and race course map (both available on the net see mountainbikeracer.com for race course map). Pay close attention to both maps, as it is extremely easy to get lost in this place. A GPS would be helpful! Take any of the race course routes.

who: anyone with balls, health and commitment.
where: pick a trail and commit to it, you have no other choice. look for white markers at trailheads and intersections. easy doesnt mean easy-these trails are made for atvs not mtbs so easy to them is like intermediate to us. "more difficult" is gnarly. loose, tight, and unpredictable. these trails are mercilous and worth any travel made to get to them. bring lots of water and spare tubes you will need one or both.

Customer Service

BIG CORRECTION!!!! this is not in anyway Gettysburg! It is 20 miles south of CARLISLE which is like 40 MILES FROM GETTYSBURG. I-81 to Hanover street exit (2nd Exit if traveling south)-south on Rt 34 through Mt. Holly (little town) once in Pine Grove park turn left onto Bendersville Rd-climb to top of mountain, parking on left. big-assed lot.

I rode in Michaux once and I think the trails are over rated. They suck. If I had my choice I would ride in Rattling Creek. The trails up there are awesome. Lychins has great singletrack.

Customer Service

The trails in Rattling Creek are much better.

If you go up the road the goes through Pine Grove St Furnace at the top is a HUGE parking lot. From here you can take many trails down either side of the Mountain. There is also a road "Mountain Ridge Road" that will lead you out further to more trials. These trials are mostly the ATV trials. They are VERY rocky and some are almost impossible. Especially the ones labeled "Most Difficult". These are fun and there are some BITCHIN Downhills. But there are better trials hereIf you park at the furnace. and ride out to RT 233. Take a left. You can then ride up Old Shippensburg Road. This will lead you to the start of a trial that follows a logging road to "Michaux Rd" take a right and yell see the trial on your left after like 50 feet. Ride this. There are many diff ways to do it; it splits 2 or 3 times. Each has a nice DH in it someplace. Keep Going "RIGHT" to extend your ride.
Another great place to start is on 233. Drive past the entrance to the furnace. And about 2 miles or so up the road will be a dirt pull off on the right side. Its big you cant miss it. Start here and go into the woods. You will come to a bridge over a stream. Follow this RT keeping to the right. It will lead you to some very technical up hill. The up hill will end with a hard climb up some S turns. At the top of this go left. (This is also where the above trial will bring you. If you stay right)
After taking the left follow this single track to you hit a road "Woodrow Road" its a good climb up Woodrow Road till you get to a big right turning the road, you can head into the woods right there. (Ignore any signs you see) this Single Track is BADASS isnt ridden much cause its hidden. This will take you along the ridge for a long time. It will dump you in an opening. Take a left down the grassy road. This DH is FAST and it turns back into ST quickly. This will snake its way down the ridge and dump you on another grassy road. Take this till you hit a dirt road. (Woodrow Road again) take a left and go like 200 yards. Yull see a trial on your right. Take this and it will bring you back to the bridge on the stream. Its a great ride. Best in Michaux IMO.

Customer Service
