Sugarloaf (Ohiopyle State Park) - TRAIL

Sugarloaf (Ohiopyle State Park) - Trail, Fayette County, Pennsylvania

3.8 miles of rocks. no, i'm not kidding. its all rocks. Uphill or down hill. all rocks. you'll need a bike with a full suspension to even have a chance of not waking up in unworldly amounts of pain the next morning. Its difficult, also. This isn't the place you'd see a family with 3 kids on bikes with training wheels. As you shoot down a 100 foot decent(you'll know which one it is) and your squeezing your brakes but they're barely slowing you down, you'll wonder how the heck you got yourself into this. unfortunetly, at that moment, you won't be able to remember how you got yourself into this, because you'll be going so fast and being bounced around so hard, you won't be able to think. Check it out, it's the best trail i've ever rode.

I started at the Ohiopyle parking lot and went up hill for 1 hour and 5 minutes. It was mostly rocky and steep with some swamp along the way. Especially appealing were the piles of horse feces. I love it when you go through a nice pile and it gets picked up by your tires and evenly distributed about your bike and body. Downhill was only marginally better- 41 minutes. If you were to consider doing this trail I would suggest getting a lift up to the top. The climb is not worth the ride down.

It was not fun at all.

ENTER TRAIL AS I STATED ABOVE. THIS IS THE ONLY REAL UPHILL PART OF THE ENTIRE RIDE (IT HAS BEEN A YEAR SINCE I'VE RIDDEN THIS BUT I USED TO RIDE IT WEEKLY). WHEN YOU GET TO TOP OF HILL GO STRAIGHT! THIS IS THE MAIN TRAIL. ITS NOT VERY EASY TO GET LOST ON THIS TRAIL , BUT THERE ARE SOME SPURS SO KEEP YOU HEAD UP! AFTER THAT UPHILL IT IS PRETTY MUCH DOWN FROM THERE. THERE ARE SOME MAJOR RUTTED OUT ROCK GARDENS THAT WILL CHALLENGE YOU. WATCH FOR A COUPLE OF HARD RIGHT HAND TURNS AT BOTTOM OF WICKED D-HILLS. THERE ARE SEVERAL ROAD CROSSINGS. THROUGH OUT THE RIDE SO HEADS UP. YOU KNOW YOU FINISHED THE DOWNHILL WHEN YOU COME TO DOUBLE TRACK WITH CRUSHED GRAVEL. AFTER THIS SECTION YOU CROSS THE MAIN ROAD THAT LED YOU TO THE TOP OF MOUNTAIN. FOLLOW TRAIL UNTIL YOU HIT RAILS TO TRAILS. GO LEFT AND FOLLOW THROUGH TOWN. STOP A HAVE SOME ICE CREAM AT LITTLE COUNTRY STORE AND GO WATCH THE CRAZY PEOPLE TRY TO DROWN THEMSELVE IN THE YOUGH.
AFTER A LITTLE REST YOU NEED TO MAKE IT BACK TO YOU VEHICLE. I DON'T SUGGEST RIDING BACK THE WAY YOU CAME, I WOULD JUST RIDE UP THE ROAD. LUNG BURNER!!!!
NOW GO AND HAVE SOME FUN. (I WOULD RATE IT HIGHER BUT IT IS NOT VERY LONG.)
