Hillman State Park - TRAIL

Hillman State Park - Trail, Bavington, Pennsylvania

Miles of awesome trails, but you can only ride here on Sunday during hunting season.

There are trails here for all levels. You will experience some of the best riding in the area If you've never been here before I recommend taking a compass or GPS.
The park is huge and it would be easy to get lost, but you can usually find a road.

Go prepared. At least a pump, spare tube, tire levers and a patch kit.

Great trail system with a lot of work being down. Some new drops and jumps, as well as some berms being developed. Maintenance has really picked up. Tremendous amount of potential. Soon will have a section like North Parks Dr. J's FreeRide Park. Trails dry out quickly. Nice scenery. Beware of hunters.

I am a horseback rider. I was there yesterday 11/3/13. My horse was attacked by someones dog! They were with a bunch of other cyclist. There were 2 dogs, both not on a leash. One keep lunging at my horses face and wouldn't listen to the owner. Didn't realize it until after my horses lip had scratches and a chunk taken out of his lower lip. Someone knows who owns these dogs. Please tell them if they cant control their dog to leave it home. If I'm out there and I see this dog loose and still uncontrolled, it will be the owners fault as to what happens to that dog.

I grew up riding these trails and though I moved to the city I still try to ride here every weekend. I have ridden most of the trails in the Pgh area and I still hold this place as my favorite. Great trails kept in pretty good condition. Very fast and windy. You can spend 2+ hours here and not ride the same trail twice. The trails dry out nice after rain. I will post a map of the old 9 mile MOM race track on here soon.

I can't believe old Bavington hasn't racked up more reviews here! These trails are very well made and technical. Sometimes you feel like they just won't give you a break, but most of the time you find yourself moving really fast.

Mid summer the overgrowth can get pretty rough, unpassable where thorns are in the mix. And then of course Sundays only during hunting season. But if you get to know these trails you have one of the best rides in SW PA at your disposal. Unlike some of the less remote trail networks, you don't find yourself at intersections every .3 miles wondering which way to go. There's a great map available - maybe look on PORC to find it and don't be afraid to come out on a trail work day to clear those aforementioned thorns.

A few falls ago I put together a 33 mile ride without touching the same trail twice. Like the description says, 40 miles of trails.. all made for MTB.

The Haul Rd trail head will take you into the Month of Mud TT course (R.I.P) which is pretty well clear all year. Keep going straight, and when you get to a road (that the trail doesn't continue exactly across the street on) ride a short ways up or down the road to find the next trail. Look for old arrows painted on the ground (R.I.P. again MoM.) The Figure 8 trailhead off Knowlton Hill Rd, or the RC airport trailheads are good in spring and fall, but the less traveled trails can get overgrown in the summer.

Lots of pedaling, little walking. Bavington is a vast network of technically complicated twists, turns and reasonable obstacles. The pine forests offer some of the most beautiful and interesting trails in pittsburgh. one of these pine row sections is about 5-10 acers thats like standing in a military grave yard in Washington DC. it would be impossible to navigate through without the trail that weaves through the pines like a maze for about a mile. If you know the trails well, then it is a great place to go for a night ride because they do not close the enterance at night.

there are two main trailheads, one by the RC airport (many miles of trails-hours) and the figure 8 trailhead (6 miles?-45 min). I always hit up the figure 8 trail because its fun to go fast on then come back on the fireroad. Roots, pine needles, short downhills and uphills. The other trail can get technical riding switchbacks and on the edge of cliffs. People DO HUNT HERE. Wear Orange in hunting season! Ive seen horses on the Fire Roads -Advice: GO FAST

Customer Service

turn right on the State Game Lands road across from the KNOWLTON building. Go down untill you see the No Motor Vehicles sign and go up the fireroad untill you get to the end. The figure 8 singletrack is off to the right(before the fireroad on the right) The fireroad boarders this trail. The other trail is down the road past the KNOWLTON building on the right. go down the BAD road and make a right into the parkinglot. The trailhead is off to the left of the lot

I’ve only ridden here once, but this place is great! Unlike most of the other places to ride in PGH, Hillman Park / Bavington State Gamelands is HUGE. Bring your GPS if you have one, I could see how you could get lost pretty easily. The other thing that sets this place apart is that it’s a pine forest. Pine needle covered singletrack is very, very fun! There’s some fast, wider singletrack where you can get some use out of your big ring and there’s some tight stuff where your bar ends will be flirting with the trees. I talked to some guys that ride there regularly and they said that in places the pine trees are so dense that you can ride there in the rain and not even know it’s raining. Everything I rode had good “flow’ to it and I did lots of pedaling and very little walking.

Miles of branching trails, easy to get lost. On former strip mining area. Reclamation efforts planted pines, so trails are soft and many don't get too muddy. Remote location. Gradual descents with moderate to difficult technical sections make these trails lots o' fun. Trails good for beginner and experienced riders alike. Good place to go with a group of friends with differing skill/insanity levels. Don't go alone...locals warned that some guy got lost for a couple days and the state police chopper had to find him..
