Atchison (Hog Ridge Lake Metro Park) - TRAIL

Atchison (Hog Ridge Lake Metro Park) - Trail, Madison, Ohio

Mountain Bike Ohio covered this trail in their 1st and 2nd editions. It is a great ride for somebody stuck in Cleveland. Trail makes great use of a limited real estate. Log jumps, root jumps, rut jumps, hairpins galore. Most of it is pretty easy but there are some parts that require you to stay alert. Definitely scenic. Don't fall off the cliff to the right of the trail midway through because it would probably hurt. The best part is the descent into the river via the River Loop which includes a couple of short, rooty v-drops, more roots, and a not-so-nice switchback. Ride back up is a little tough, but worth it. Definitely not as technical as the Dump or the Knob, but it's legal and the trail's got a nice rhythm to it. More XC than anything else, but still a good place to ride every now and then.

This is a good beginner's trail. They do a nice job of up-keep. Not very technical, and no real climbs/descents. Some roots, trail is pretty tight, with some nice switchbacks. You can see most of the trail the whole time, they got the most out of the acreage. Not a ton of trails in Lake county, worth checking out, or trying or dialing in a new product, as you can make several loops.

Fast single track, short climes, short DHs nothing steep at all. 3 log rides, well 1 real one, a few small bridges about 4 I think. CAMBA site says 3 miles, more like 2. Not worth the dive from the west side of Cleveland. But then again there are no legal trails on the west side of Cleveland. If you don’t live near by, don’t waist you time if you’re looking for something more challenging go south a bit to WEST BRANCH state park, but I guess it’s not be for the beginner or some that live near by.

The re-routes have set in nicely and have eliminated most, but not all, of the wet spots and also made the trail 'flow' better. At only 2 miles, the next stage will be to completely eliminate the last few wet spots and add a bit of distance, although we'll be limited by the acerage. The re-opening of the river loop will be a key, but will require a lot of work to make the section susstainable.

Customer Service

I always ride the loop clockwise (so you get to ride down the little steep hill).

Jan from Columbus: Sorry you made the trip to Atchinson and found it a waste of time. Again to reiterate, Atchinson belongs to Lake Metroparks and unfortunately we do need to abide by their rules. CAMBA has been working with the park to do the best we can do with the limited space and if you have been out there since Sept. 21 you will notice a few re-routes that have been completed and also a few new sections-to-be. There will be an official work day out there on Nov. 30 but if you want to go out anytime and work the trails then please do so but stay in our flagged areas or send me an e-mail and I'll be happy to meet you out there or at least fill you in on what to do.

this trail was a waste of my time. if your driving more than 10 minutes to get there dont even bother. i drove from the west cleveland and it was a major disapointment. this trail shows how desperate northern ohio is for mountain biking.

First, Atchinson is the ONLY legal mountain bike park that is a part of Lake Metroparks. Second, HogBACK ridge is a Lake Metroparks park located ACROSS the Grand River from Atchinson and is NOT legal to ride. This property needs riders AND people to help maintain it if it is to stay open. Members of NOMBA have worked on it and can be reached via their Lake County rep at rkand@ncweb.com.

I posted this trail up for publicity. The only reason I mentioned Hog Ridge is because there is a Hog Ridge sign at the trailhead and there isn't a sign anywhere near the trail that has Atchison on it - hence, that's why I put it in parenthesis. I am not advocating riding across the river on the illegal trails. This was merely to give directions.

The trail is one of the better NOMBA trails out there. See my review above. 4 tires due to proximity to Cleveland... 3 if near anything else we were all actually allowed to mountain bike on.

Sorry to Raiderjakk if I sounded out of line for his review. It actually was a nice review and I overreacted on the Hogback Ridge riding. Please do NOT park anywhere near the trailhead, including across the street especially cause the farmer that owns that piece of property will AND has called the police about riders parking there. Please park at Riverview Park and ride the 1.6 miles up Bates to the trail entrance. If interested in helping maintain the trail please contact the Lake county rep at rkand@ncweb.com.

Just wanted to say "Thanks" to the Trail Designers who made this trail and heads up to NOMBA for giving us some real estate to ride on. As soon as my wife gives me some cash, I'll join NOMBA, and I'd probably pay/work just to keep this particular trail open.

It seems I'm the only guy who consistently reviews it or rides it sometimes. Not too technical, but still scenic and enjoyable. Great no pressure riding... good solo trip because you can't get lost or hurt too badly. Worth the trip for a scenic view of the Grand River.

Customer Service

Around the loop. : )

Similar Products Used: Indian River/Paines Falls for *hiking* were particularly great to walk on. They would probably be good for biking, but hopefully that will come with time. Lake County Metroparks rival the state parks in terms of beauty... more rugged and less commercial.
