Wayehutta (Roy A. Taylor ATV Park) - Trail, cullowhee/sylva, Carolina

Wayehutta (Roy A. Taylor ATV Park) - Trail, cullowhee/sylva, Carolina

DESCRIPTION

lots of different trails that are jam packed full of whoops and banked turns. it beginns with a bitch of a three mile climb, then hold on all the way until the parking lot. lots of fun. Only go when it is dry, because atv's and motorcycles ride here and they make it really messy. be careful of motorcycles ans atv's coming up behind you on the climb.

I RODE THIS TWO DIFFERENT OCCASIONS...THE TRAIL IS PRETTY GOOD. I LIKE TO GET MYSELF MUDDY AS CAN BE AND BOTH TIMES I CAME BACK INTO HARRILL DORM F-ING COVERED IN MUD! IT WAS AWESOME! THE ACTUAL WAYEHUTTA ATV PARK IS ALRIGHT, IT WOULD BE GOOD PRACTICE FOR A 4X RACER OR A DOWNHILL RACER. ONE YEAR AGO THIS WOULD GET 5 STARS BUT I QUIT THE RECKLESS DOWNHILLING AND FREERIDING AFTER A PARALYZED ANKLE AND TWO KNEE SURGERIES. IT IS STILL FUN DOWNHILL, AND THE UPHILL IS FUN TOO (I WAS RIDING A HARDTAIL). SOME OF THE WATERBARS CAN BE USED AS TABLE TOPS.

WELL THE FIRST TIME I WENT I WENT UP MOSES CREEK ROAD TO THE SHARP RIGHT HAND SWITCHBACK AND FOLLOWED THE CREEK UPSTREAM ON A MUDDY ROAD. THIS WAS A SCENIC RIDE AND HAD FUN UPHILLS. IT GOES RIGHT BY A BIG OLE WATERFALL. IM SURE THAT SOMEWHERE IT LINKS UP WITH WAYEHUTTA, BUT I EVENTUALLY JUST TURNED AROUND ABOUT A MILE AND A HALF PAST THE WATERFALL AND BOMBED BACK DOWN THE MTN. TODAY I WENT INTO WAYEHUTTA PARK AND RODE UP 455 TO THE 457 JUNCTION AND THEN JUST RODE BACK DOWN 455. DONT RIDE OFF TO THE LEFT INTO THAT LONG MUDHOLE. I LIKE TO COME OUT MUDDY, BUT THE MUD WAS SHOULDER-DEEP! I LOST A CROC CLOG IN THAT $HIT! I ALSO RODE 460 AND 480 AND IT WAS PRETTY AWESOME. FLOWS LIKE NUMBER 2!!

I have just started riding this new loop. I go up cane creek to firebird trail to the atv park and down through trail 459 i think. it's the best downhill i've ever done. I try and ride this 14 mile loop every day or so, if you go to WCU and want to ride with me, hit up the email. c.zotter@mchsi.com

Very challenging climb. Elevation change is at least 1000 feet from trail head to top of mountain. Trails deserve a most difficult rating. The decent is worth the effort to get to the top. Many water breaks, berms and obstacles. Be sure to bring a spare tube and pump because sharp rocks are numerous and hard to avoid on the decent.

Customer Service

Climb from trail head up #1 (sawmill bottoms) approximately three miles to top of mountain. Descend trail #7.

Trail can be accessed from Moses Creek Road. This is a better route when conditions are extremely muddy.

I'm a former student, left Cullowhee in 97. We have been all over the area. Try exploring different fireroads and you'll be amazed where you end up. Routes take you to Cane Creek road, Caney Creek Rd., and is also the bottom half of the infamous "Parkway Descent." I still do the Descent every year when I'm visiting the area.

Customer Service

It's all good.

I ride these once a month - fantastic downhills after a grueling uphill climb - beginners stay away(takes ~45-1 hour). You'll hit the waterbars with increasing speed until you have a "near death" experience which will then slow you down again - a lot of fun!!! I've put together a number of "cat walks" in the directions which allow you to traverse the mountain and pick up as much downhill as possible. Adding in the options just brings in more downhills.

Customer Service

455 to 456 (2nd junction at 479 intersection) which is uphill for 3.3 miles. Descend 456 to 457 connector to 459. Descend 459 to 481 across to 460. Descend 460 to gravel road and back to parking lot (10.5 miles). Short option: At end of 460 descent, climb 480 to 458. Go back across 481 to 460 for another descent. Long option: Near end of 481 take left switchback onto 461 and climb 460 to 456 again. Can also add short option for even more downhills. Print these directions and pick up a map from the attendant - it will all make sense.

My husband, sister and her husband came to North Carolina looking for some adventure in trail riding. We spend a lot of time riding our ATV's in Oklahoma, which has little or no mountains. We had a really good time on this trail, but didn't find it much of a challenge. We ride harder trails in Oklahoma. However for family fun I think it would be great for beginners and for taking your children. Again we had a great time and the view was wonderful

not every old skid road or doubletrack is on the map, but its a good guide. THE POTENTIAL HERE FOR AN ALL-DAY NETWORK OF HARD RIDING IS SICK. we rode a few old skid roads that had reverted to a wide singletrack, but nobody rides here so the duff is deep and soft and there were some trees down. do your climbs on the currently used fire roads off of moses creek rd, they are packed hard. WCU students get off the couch and lets get this place developed.

Customer Service

we rode part of a very extensive network just east of the ATV area up Moses Creek Rd. get the national geographic trails illustrated map for nantahala gorge and this area is on it.
