Cane Creek Park - Trail, Waxhaw, Carolina

Cane Creek Park - Trail, Waxhaw, Carolina

DESCRIPTION

Good trails for all skill levels. Some technical, with some good fast sections. Watch for horses and hikers as it is multi-use. I usully ride a 10 mile loop, but there are at least 20 miles of trails with some decent creek crossings. Small fee ($3) for well groomed trails and a trail map is available for free. One tip to remember, when hitting that slippery climb, look for the dried horse turds. They give a good traction boost.

Cane Creek trails are excellent. The park staff has done a good job really buffing them, making it possible to keep up a good momentum.

Customer Service

I do the day use area--loop it twice for about 10 miles.

The trails were pretty good. I thought they were not as good as Owls Roost or Lake Higgins. I still liked it because it was a place to ride and I love to ride. So though it was not so fast or so slow you just keep pedaling on and on . I rode about 22 miles and it kept me entertained
all the way through so yeah it's a good place to ride over all.

Customer Service

Im not really sure since my dad was driving but we followed 200 South if that helps any. Sorry about that.

The map on this is wrong; it is located south of Charlotte, not in Raleigh. Moderator: please reset.

The riders who "dissed" these trails must have either had a really bad day, or a serious need for pain, these trails are Just Plain Fun! Admittitedly, they are not very technical, I'm about a "3" on the tech scale, depending on how the planets are aligned ;-3) and I did nearly all of the 11+ miles in the middle ring. There's just enough hazardwise to keep you on your toes (and make it interesting), without having to worry about any serious "biff factor" to slow you down. If you need it to be more "techie", ride faster! Most of what you'll encounter are managable roots and mud, with some nice rock gardens on the southern half of the park. These trails are an excellent choice if you are introducing newbies to singletrack, or even not-so-newbies to Carolina singletrack. Take them on the upper red loop (day use section), if they want more, hit the purple trail, which is laughably simple until you cross the dam, then it extolls it's price. There is some good tech 2.5-3 riding, and a few spots are 3+ if you don't hit them right, or don't know they're coming, like that surprise stream crossing with the steep, rocky climbs... The lower red and green loops (camping section) are a sightseers delight, extrodinarily beautiful. Use the blue trail to join them, and just have FUN!

Customer Service

I took the upper red loop (doubletrack) CCW to warm up, then the purple trail (starts as double, becomes singletrack) into the lower red loop CCW, then back along the purple trail to blue trail to green loop CW, back along blue and purple to start. 11+ miles of fun this way. BTW, just after the dam on purple, there are a couple of trails that scream down then back up the holler, these can be used as a short cut, ur a thrilling diversion, your choice. ALL trails are clearly blazed, with many parts (especially stream crossings) giving you a choice between easy and hard paths. Nice, especially if you prefer bridges to mud.

There are horses there and they can get in the way and block you up, but less horseback riders are there at night. Sometimes it is best to stay near the creeks where less horses are. The fee is $3 but it is worth it.

Customer Service

Take the trails nearest to the creeks for the more scenic route however some area a biker could fall in. Some of the most difficult trails are away from the creek area though.

A good thing about this set of trails is that they are relatively close to anyone living around Charlotte. If one stays on the designated mtb trails, he will be fine. They are pretty much what one can expect from a park: varied surfaces, somewhat heavy usage, and lack of serious topographic diversity. The riding is pretty technical, but it's nothing a novice couldn't do. There are not many places where one would have to walk, so it's a good ride for beginners and veterans who just want a quick ride. Just watch out, and yield, to horses.
