Yellow Gap Trail - TRAIL

Yellow Gap Trail - Trail, Mills River, Carolina

This trail is almost all downhill to the river. No uphills once you hit the trail, but the road climb up to it is a little challenge. It snakes its way down to N.Mills River about 3/4 mile away. Those of you who enjoy seeing wildlife while riding will envy me. Truthfully, I saw a black bear, 2 wild turkeys & a huge jackrabbit all on one trip down this trail. That alone makes it a "must ride" if you're in the area visiting. You will come out along the river at the 4th crossing above the campground. The 3rd crossing back towards the campground has the swinging bridge, so the river only has to be forged 3x. Once you come back out on Yellow Gap Road (FS#1206), turn right to get back to the gated road where you parked. I personally don't park at the gate, but rather I usually park down below the campground.

This trail is great. Best tie it to some others in this area. The river crossings are nice in the summer months. After the swinging bridge and field, you can climb up the lower end of Trace Ridge Trail to get to the parking lot at Trace Ridge Trailhead. This is a shortcut only some locals know about.
