South Shore of Hickory - Trail, Hickory, Carolina

South Shore of Hickory - Trail, Hickory, Carolina

DESCRIPTION

Started out as XC trail. About 4 miles of total XC if you loop the many trails together. The South Shore is hidden, but if you can follow tire tracks off the end of the parking lot, you'll see it on the left after entering the woods. The Shore can get you hurt, or smelly. Stunts are the highlight of the Shore. Thank Carlos if you see him. Try out the Awesome Bill Downhill. There are some big drops (10+ ft), and then there is THE big drop that will be posted on my website soon. New stuff every week thanks to the hicks. See website for more details. GOOD LUCK!!!

This is a great place for an experienced mountain biker. The way I would describe the trail is not as one trail, but as many. Its more like a system of trails that all form one large loop, but you can either ride certain sections or all of it at once. The terrain is great. It has some rock sections, but most of it is classic dirt single track. The trails are based around a green way/paved walking path which is popular all times of the year. The network is very complicated, but it is very hard to get lost because if you keep riding you are bound to cross the paved pathway or at least be able to see it from the trail. This trail is popular and is well maintained. There are still new sections being built. One great thing is that there is a repair station located in the parking lot with a bike pump, a stand, and some simple tools. This place is very fun, but it would be helpful if there was a map.

This is one of the few local trails near Hickory. It is off the paved walking trail between Hickory and Geitner Municipal Parks. Access is behind the VFW lodge parking lot or left off the paved walkway. I've only lived here a year, but I've lived and ridden trails all over the country and raced for a total of six seasons up to a couple years ago.
My impression is that this trail has seen some better days. The stunts and big downhills mentioned in previous posts are gone, (good riddance, in my opinion) but some of the old bridges are still in good shape. Kudos to whoever has improved the maintenence and layout since spring of 08. I've heard rumors that it is a single individual and not the cityparks. Whoever it is has made a welcome attempt at consolidating the paths and spurs toward a more usual main trail and direction of travel. Improvements have been made on some of the tighter turns. Direction arrows are confusing, but yellow tape is still up from a race in March. They also built a new walking bridge strong enough to withstand a hurricane! The newly added trail section has a downhill that ends in sharp turn to avoid a big drop into the lake--too dangerous for a beginner.
The trail itself is tight and technical with some climbs that require more than minimal fitness to master. The whole thing is therefore pretty slow and lacks a good rhythm. No swooping flow here--it's mostly work, but that's a good thing!
The one thing that bothers me most is the landfill and construction refuse all over one side of the park. If we really want to improve this trail, cleaning that up should be a priority. I'd be willing to help or organize a volunteer group if anyone is interested. I'm sure the city has no money for trails.

Hats off to Al and the city of Hickory for the work they've done on these trails! Expect five miles of big fun with some great little technical (but not too so) sections and some lungbustin' climbs to boot. You will be winded and you will be back...

Customer Service

Follow the yellow arrows and orange markings on the trees.

THE TRAIL WITH THE NEW SECTIONS ADDED IS 5 MILES LONG, WITH SOME TECHNICAL AND CLIMBING, VERY ROOTED. IT'S THE KIND OF TRAIL YOU HAVE TO FIND AND TAKE GOOD LINES AROUND. NOTHING HAS PUSHED MY HEART RATE LIKE THIS TRAIL. THE TRAIL IS ALSO MARKED VERY WELL AND IS EASY TO FOLLOW. THE FASTEST TIME SOO FAR IS 34 MINS. THREE GUYS BUILT THE WHOLE TRAIL AND HAS DID AMAZING JOB. HATS OFF TO THEM.

ALSO THERE IS A MEET EVERY TUESDAY EVENING AROUND 5:30 PM IN THE PARKING LOT AND EVERYBODY TAKES OFF ABOUT 5:40 PM AND JUST RIDE AND HAVE FUN. GO AS FAST AS YOU WANT AND AS SLOW AS YOU WANT, IT'S ALL ABOUT MEETING PEOPLE, MOUNTAIN BIKING AND HAVING FUN.

ANY QUESTIONS MY name is jason and my E-MAIL ADDRESS IS JCaldwell704@yahoo.com

THE TRAIL IS AWSOME, TECHNICAL, CLIMBING, ROOTY, DOWNHILL AND THE PEOPLE THAT RIDE THE TRAIL ARE NICE AND FUN TO RIDE WITH. I HAVE NEVER WENT OUT THERE AND DIDN'T MEET ANYBODY, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE RIDING ON THE TRAIL.

ALSO, THE GOOD THING ABOUT THIS TRAIL IS IT CRISS CROSSES OVER PAVED WALKING ROAD. IF SOMETHING HAPPENS YOU CAN ALWAYS GET ON THE PAVED WALKING ROAD AND RIDE OR PUSH BACK TO UR CAR. NOMATTER WHERE UR AT IN THE TRAIL, THE PAVED WALKING PATH IS SOMEWHERE INSIGHT OR NEAR.
IT'S MORE TECHNICAL AND I FEEL HARDER THAN PEE-WEES, BUT PEE-WEES IS TRAILS ARE BETTER MARKED.

OH IF UR EVER IN THE AREA, STOP BY CLARKS BICYCLE SHOP. ONE OF THE BEST BICYCLE SHOPS I HAVE EVER WENT TO.

Customer Service

TO START THE TRAIL, YOU WILL HAVE TO RIDE DOWN THE PAVED WALKING ROAD, AND YOU WILL SEE YELLOW ARROWS ON THE PAVMENT, JUST FOLLOW DOES ARROWS TO THE TRAILS. PLUS THE TRAIL CRISS CROSSES OVER THE PAVED WALKING ROAD, SO YOU CAN DO DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF THE TRAIL WITHOUT HAVING TO RIDE THE WHOLE THING. COOL IF UR PRESSED FOR TIME.

OH YEAH ..I didnt know if this trail was still here but I made the long ride from my house anyway and its still there.I just moved here from florida and ive been looking on the internet to try and find a good place to ride.I went to pee wees and wasnt too impressed so I took a shot on this place (the last review was from last year)and this place is pretty cool it is just like the trails I grew up on in florida. Its only a ten minute drive from my house so Ill be out there alot. The trail is very xc oriented there are some stunts and drops but mostly xc stuff the stunts are pretty well maintained and I would like to help keep the trail groomed but there are no signs or info so go there if you like twisty up and down xc and harder lots of fun.

To BB: I get it. You know the new location. If you were really serious about keeping your obstacles a secret and not simply posing for the crowd in this forum, you would have just moved them without notice. Unless you own, or manage the trail property, keep your snide warnings to yourself. This is a forum for sharing public trail information and promoting the sport, not discouraging trail use. With 25 years experience in adventure sports, I find attitudes like yours the most contemptible. If you find a little-known trail that flips your switch, then ride it and keep your mouth shut about it. But don't post to a public forum to scare the children and impress the big people.

The South shore has been torn down! We removed all the stunts and moved them to a secret location! So if your looking for stunts I would recommend Wintergreen resort in Va.
