Bald eagle trail at Higgin's Lake - Trail, Greensboro, Carolina

Bald eagle trail at Higgin's Lake - Trail, Greensboro, Carolina

DESCRIPTION

Trail is a sigle track that goes out and back. There are some good logs to get over, several places you can really launch yourself into the air on some jumps, Crosses over two roads but you keep going. pretty smooth riding but excellent to have fun on. Watch out for the creek and mud after a good rain, gets pretty dirty out there.

Recent updates to this trail have improved it considerably. There have been repairs made to several of the boardwalks and some of the nastier rooty bits have been cleaned up. This is a trail that requires concentration if you want to pick the nice line. The ability to learn the best lines around blind corners/hills after riding it a few times helps, as well. The trail is a 4.1 mile away-and-back but includes a 1.2 mile loop in the middle, which is highly recommended to avoid the worst of the rooty parts.

Pros: Not too much climbing, but enough to get your heart going. There are several spots where some good speed can be acheived to help roll over the roots. Interesting scenery with lots of tree variety, views of Lake Higgins and boardwalks over the swamp-like marsh areas on the southwest leg. Really fun and challenging tight turns. Not ridden heavily like some other close-by trails (I'm talking about you, Owl's Roost and Wild Turkey..).

Cons: At its best, there are still a few roots. Where there are many roots, you will either appreciate your full-suspension bike or long for one. But, the worst of the rooty bits can be avoided completely if you do the extension loop. When it rains, it typically takes 1-2 days longer here to dry out than most other trails in the area.

Customer Service

This trail works pretty good from either end, and many people ride it both ways. However, I have 3.4 miles of road to get to the trailhead and 1.4 miles after the trail to get home again so if you're a ride-from-home person like me, one pass can be a good workout, too. If you ride just one way, I recommend the Lake Higgins marina entrance. It starts out very nice and not too rooty so by the time you get to the roots bits near the end by Fleming Rd. you're ready for whatever it throws at you. End-to-end with the extension its about 5 miles.

Wild Turkey at Bur-Mil is the best trail in town but its not a secret. Its just too busy when I ride. Also in Bur-Mil is Owl's Roost which is more advanced than WT but not as fast (more roots and fewer descents).

I feel this trail compares a great bit to reedy fork trail, only this one has MUCH MORE ROOTS, it can be fun and there are some places to get up some speed. It all depends on what you like. This trail is great for working on picking your lines (especially if you ride a hardtail), changing gears at the right moment, and working through... you guessed it, roots. Not a lot of elevation change, but what is there gives a workout, especially with.....yes, the roots. It is fairly well kept up, in good shape, a good length, especially with...the added distance on the end loop to stretch it to the road on the other end. My only complaint is the "short side of the loop is soooooo rooty, I don't even mean like the rest of the trail, it was certainly not worth going over. You have to pedal at a snail pace but go too slow and you get hung. Anyone who has been out there knows what I mean. I really like this trail, but I will remember to take the "long part of the loop" back and not try the shortcut on the way back to the marina.

Customer Service

As it is an out-and-back, not much to say, ride it out and then back. When you get to the "loop", where the trail splits, I recommend staying right (assuming you started at the marina)and on the way back stay left and just totally retrace your path. But you may have to experience the torture zone once just to say you did it, or to say you did the entire trail, or to understand what I mean, or if you are masochistic (beyond what a normal mtbker is).

A fun ride for all skill levels. Also suitable for beginners. Only downside is that it is rather rooty in places. Also there are two road crossings, so be careful there.

This is an out and back. You will cross two roads that split the trail. Muddy trail, some good spot to get air time. One real long climb. Logs to hop and some chances to gain some speed. Enjoyable ride, not to tough.

Rode this trail yesterday. Not tough from a climbing standpoint, but lots of fun. Makes for a great training ride. The only real downside is that there are several muddy places, but the trail is well maintained. Good for beginners as the first part of the trail is out and back, and gets more challanging as you go out. Some tricky root sections. Different parts of the trail reminded me of Bur Mill Park, Salem Lake, and Hobby Park.

Excellent trail for beginners. I love it. I have only been riding for a little over a month and have found this trail to be a great workout and more importantly, a lot of fun. Two areas to be cautious: narrow paths and nice jump on second leg of trail. Narrow paths can cause you to run into trees if you hit roots wrong. The jump is great but be careful not to hit it going too fast. I have not gone down on THIS trail but have seen others.

Start at the second Lake Higgins entrance off 220.
