UNWC aka Catawba Riverfront Park - TRAIL

UNWC aka Catawba Riverfront Park - Trail, Charlotte, Carolina

11 +/- miles of HARDPACKED twisty Carolina singletrack - ish type trails. This is the old Catawba Riverfront Park aka Historic Tuckaseegee Ford Park.It never was much to behold in the past, just a little parking area, some great trail and I85 and some huge powerlines overhead. well thats all changed now. Enter the US National Whitewater Center. If you build it they will come and so they have. The Whitewater Center obliterated some trail but the TARHEEL TRAILBLAZERS have done a great job to bring this place back up to its past glory. However, in bringing the outdoors to the masses and in some respects bringing the masses to the outdoors some of the edginess or tech aspects of the trail have been lost. Say WAL Mart meets singletrack. A little sumthin' for everyone but with everything accessible and homogenized. The trail is HEAVILY used and very well packed. The roots even have a shine to them from thousands and thousands of knobbies. Trail is very well marked and not very tech but certain sections at speed will put you in the hospital.Pay Attention do not let your mind wander here. Most of your tech stuff is down by the river in the form of root balls and twisty trail. Figure Eight Trail is not as tech as they lead you to believe but drops need your full commitment. I got at least five feet of air off a couple. All in All trail can be ridden at a blistering twelve mile an hour average with a thirty mile an hour top speed by an accomplished rider. Yes its a great ride but for an older SOUL RIDER such as my self its too umm civilized.

There is something for everyone at the USNWC. Beginners should take the Green Trail. Figure 8, Goat Trail, Carpet Trail, Weigh Station, Toilet Bowl, and Bath Tub are all intermediate to advanced. 19.6 miles if you do it all. Ratings are based on a "full tour". :)

Customer Service

All of it + thread trail.

Well maintained trails with lots of options. Good climbs and technical sections. Only drawbacks are the $5 per car fee and thorns which gave me a flat last time I was there. Would go again with a group.

Great find for out of towners looking to maintain riding endurance, explore somebody else's trails and have fun. Very twisty, few small hills, some technical aspects and about 11 miles of trails. Worth the stop, really cool place to see. We'll go back. (From Pittsburgh)

Customer Service

Just follow the signs, really can't get lost.

I love this trail! It has something for everyone. It has technical areas, fast downhill runs, and you get a great workout on some of the uphill parts. If it is your first time mountain biking I would try Lake Norman State Park first and work your way up to this trail. But once you get used to it you will love it. I have been mountain biking for about 10 months now and this is by far my favorite trail in the area. It has just enough exciting areas to keep you coming back time after time. It is broken up into sections that make it great for picking and choosing what you have time to do and saving some other parts for another ride. Or you can run hard through the whole thing and get a great workout. The scenery is beautiful along the Catawba River. You feel like you are in the mountains. I am so lucky to have this trail so close to home. I highly recommend it. You do have to be careful on some of the downhill sections that have some good size stair steps down. Enjoy!

Customer Service

I like to do the entire 11 miles. It takes me about an hour. My favorite parts are the Figure Eight Trail and most of all the Toilet Bowl Trail! Have fun and be careful!

Similar Products Used: I also highly recommend Lake Norman State Park. It is easier, but still a lot of fun!

Popular Tent is very tight and technical, but not dangerous. It takes longer to do than Catawba. It is also a lot of fun.
