Moreau Lake State Park - TRAIL

Moreau Lake State Park - Trail, undefined, York

I have riden/raced all across NYS and this is my favorite place to ride. It is the perfect combination of brutal climbs and awesome technical singletrack. You need to be in decent shape to ride here, considering all the loops are at the top of the ridge. Some of the trails are designed for hiking so you have to pick your route carefully. You can get a trail map at the park office on Old Saratoga Rd. If you get a map here is a great 2.0 hour loop that I ride all the time.

Trailhead: Park at the powerline gate just past mud pond on Spier falls rd.

Best Route: Take the orange trail across the powerline on the east side of mud pond, follow about 1 mile to mark 12 (yellow trail), stay on yellow past white, here is the tricky part on the yellow trail about a mile past the white intersection there is a singletrack trail (marked with a pile of rocks) on your left which zig zags up to the fire road (red) trail turn uphill (left)on red trail you are between mark 10& 2 at this point, follow red to 16 take red/orange to 17, take yellow to 7, take orange to 16, take red/orange again to 17, take yellow/ orange to 6, take yellow to 10, take red (downhill) back to zig-zag single track on right to yellow (between 15 & 11) to 12 take orange back to car. Sound complicated just draw it out on map, I have ridden this place every which way and this is the best route. Hopefully see you there.

Okay. This place has some great trails and all the burly aspects that I love. The reviews to show people to get to the more "flowy" trails per say are inaccurate to say the least! Just go to the mid parking area and take the green trail/fire road type trail to the red trail and go on your marry way... Simple as that!! Read the map and it's really easy to figure out what ever kind of loops you care for.

This trail network is now my favorite place to ride. A friend had been asking for me to ride with a group of his friends for sometime now but I never got a chance. This spring I joined the group and I'm hooked! Very technical, killer climbs, roots and rocks, rock bridges, logs.... you name it and you'll find it here. Oh not to mention the phenomenal views of the southern ADK's.

LEAVE YOUR BRIGHTLY COLORED SPANDEX AT HOME AND BUY A MAP IF YOU DON'T WANT TO GET LOST IN THE BADDEST RIDING IN UPSTATE NY. IT IS WHERE MEN AND BADAZ WOMEN GO TO RIDE! BRUTAL CLIMBS AND SOME OF THE MOST TECH TRAILS EVER. THEY WERE MEANT TO BE HIKED AND NOT RIDDEN. PARK DOWN BELOW AND FOLLOW THE YELLOW TRAIL UP TO MAKE IT MORE. CHALLENGING.

This trail system is amazing. The trails here seem endless. There is a tough climb to get to the top of the ridge where most of the trails are. The trails are a technical mix of double and single-track. Plenty of rocks, roots, deer, mud, technical climbs and descents. I would recommend being in pretty good shape to enjoy this ride. There is lots of difficult climbing here. There are nice lookouts along the Western Ridge Trail. Keep an eye out for hikers...and hunters. Get a map if you are not familar with the trails.

There are 3 main parking areas/trail-heads. First is Mud Pond off the base of Spire Falls Road. Next is the top of Spire Falls Road. Next is the boat launch on the other side of Spire Falls Road.

From Mud Pond you want to take the Yellow Trail, past the intersection with the White, up to a trail that cuts off to the left. I'm not sure if it is on any maps, but it cuts off the hike-a-bike on the black trail. We call it "Wind Tunnel." From there take the black trail all the way up to the Moreau Lake look out at the top. I think this is the best and most challenging way up. 100% rideable though.

From the top of the road, go in and take the Yellow trail on the left. Then get on "Wind Tunnel" on your right. The rest is the same to the top.

From the boat launch you want to head away from the hill down the road a few hundred feet and get on Orange trail on the left. There are a few ways up from here, I would keep staying left at the intersections and you will end up at the top of Spire Falls road. There take Yellow, to "Wind Tunnel" and then up.

Once at the top, have fun. There is lots of great riding.

Parking at the top of the hill on spier falls road is highly recommended. all the trails up there are cool. all except the blue trail. The trails offer a whole day of riding as well as a full serving of punishment for you and your bike. There is mud, water crossings, rock gardens, tree roots, switchbacks, off-camber sections, and some serious downhill fun. bring plenty of water. I devoured my entire camel back in seven hours mostly due to a some necessary hiking when unwittingly went up the blue trail.

Customer Service

Ride the trails at the top of the ridge. Turkey path is a really fun downhill section. so is eastern part of western ridge. also do cottage park and red oak ridge if you have time. get a $2 map from the office and you will see what im talking about.

Similar Products Used: LAKE GEORGE, prospect mt summit: Follow route 9 north out of the village. find "big hollow" road on the left after some motels. you will just go straight in and follow the dirt road after you leave the pavement. there are two culverts you need to go under. follow the main trail and go right at the fork in the trail (left is a dead end). the rock gardens here are fun. really really fun. you can get some real speed going down this really wide trail. there are a few sections that have steep banked turns you can really put your weight into and carry out some speed. be prepared for some bad ass jumps. there is also a creek that follows you the whole way along with a lot of waterfalls. bring your water filter, you may need it to refill your camel back. no map needed here.

You definately want to ride to the top of the hill of Spir falls road. Strongly recommend to pick up a map at the Moreau lake office. There is a pretty long climp but the downhill is rewarding. If you are looking for a good DAY of riding, follow the trails all the way out towards McGregor

First, here is a link to a great map and review http://www.bikerag.com/images/MAPS/ny_moreau_lakes_state_park_spier_falls_review.htm

This is simply an awesome place to ride, but not without punishment! Getting to the top seems to be an issue if you don't want any hike a bike. We parked at the highest point on spier falls road, passed gate, under power lines and took a left on yellow, then right on white, left on blue (MAJOR HIKE A BIKE), top of blue we went straight on red, then left on blue, right at SECOND white, right on yellow, followed yellow all the way back to car. Once the blue hike a bike was over the trails were great, super well maintained moderately technical, fun singletrack.. Some really cool rock work on the streams and off camber sections was much appreciated. Big thanks to those who are putting time into trail work.. After riding down yellow Im wondering if riding up that would have more or less hike a bike or if there is another way up.. Soon as I find out, I will update this review.. I did see one trail not on the posted map that might possibly do just that..

See attached trail map. I wrote the trail description above. The start of the described route starts on the west side of mud pond not east like I wrote.
