Erwin Wildlife Management Area - Trail, Painted Post, York

Erwin Wildlife Management Area - Trail, Painted Post, York

DESCRIPTION

Multiple trails criss-crossing several thousand acres. The area is closed to motorized traffic, but the State DER & a gas-driilling company occaisionally use some of the double-track. There are 2 main sets of gravel double track, several old logging roads, & a natural-gas pipeline. There are multiple single tracks branching off of each of these.

The main double track is a gravel fire-road from Gang Mills to Coopers Plain. There is one double-track spur that runs to the west & loops behind Erwin Pond. There is another short spur that runs down to the waters edge. Another spur runs to the east & ends at a gas well. From there you can continue east on a wide gas-line trail with steep hills & a mix of rocks & mud, with a few technical challenges. For more technical riding, take any of the single-track to the left or right (I haven't explored many of these yet, due to wet weather).

Customer Service

Start at the Gang Mills end to encounter the steepest hill 1st. If you'd prefer to warm-up before hitting the steep stuff, start at the Coopers Plain end.

For a nice challenging loop that can be completed in a couple hours (or less if you have the stamina & skills), start at Gang Mills. Take the double-track to the top of the hill & turn right onto more double track. Take this to the clearing with the gas well in the middle. Ride across the clearing & follow the gas line a couple miles. It ends at the top of a hill behind the Woodland Park housing development. From the top of the hill, ride toward the water tower until you find a construction road behind the houses. Take the construction road down the hill (staying to the right at the split). Look out for the washed-out ditch across the trail. You will come out on Beartown Rd. just a few hundred yards from the trail-head.
