Tour-a-Thon loop - TRAIL

Tour-a-Thon loop - Trail, Lacona, York

From the parking lot, head north on Wart Rd. travelling over the top of a small hill and partway down the other side, you'll come to the entrance to WINONA WAY on your right - take it. This will be some singletrack / atv trail providing a good up hill warm up much of the way...with a few small downhills thrown in. Eventually, WINONA WAY will spill out on to HAWLEY / TUCK RD (seasonal limited use road) and you need to take a right. Follow this road east and through the intersection of BARGY RD..continuing east. After a swift downhill you'll have to cruise through two abrupt thigh burners on your way to ALICE'S ALLEY. It will be on your left...look for the opening in the trees and the sign. Take the left onto ALICE's ALLEY. You'll follow this trail until it crosses NORTH CHURCH RD (seasonal limited use rd), where you'll cross the road and pick up ALICE's ALLEY on the other side (the easier side). 1.2 miles later links you up with HESSEL RD (unpaved). Take the sharp left on HESSEL rd. Follow HESSEL until you reach BARGY (you crossed this rd much earlier, and much further south, in the ride). Go south (left) on BARGY and take in the smooth riding..as you come to the four way intersection of NORTH CHURCH rd..cross it and continue on BARGY rd. Shortly after passing a camp on your right..you'll come to HISCOCK TRAIL..take the right..you'll come to a fork where you'll need to stay to the right (follow the yellow DEC disks)..eventually HISCOCK TRAIL will interesect with WINONA WAY (four way intersection)..take the left onto WINONA which will dump you out on HAWLEY RD (you've been here, too) ..take a right on HAWLEY and travel west about a mile and it will meet up with WART rd. (T-intersection) Take a left here..and after a few good up hills you'll be back at the parking lot ready to do it again.

Trail is excellent for intermediates and might be fun for expert riders. Good mix of high speed roads and gnarly singletrack (in some sections). Prepare to get REALLY MUDDY, numerous wash outs to travel through, inumerable ruts and divots, and some riotous downhills. If you don't stop at the trail intersections and just haul all the way through (if you can!!) its a helluva work out. Some technical sections you'll want to go through again and again until you've mastered them...it's pretty cool. Bring lots of Bug Repellent and a change of clothes - or some seat covers for your car/truck. Bottom line: for Central New York - it kicks!!

We live in this area and ride regularly. The trails vary from dirt, gravel town roads to somewhat technical double track.
The terrain is short ups and down with lots of wet spots with hard bottoms, typical Tug Hill woods. In the Spring it's really wet and muddy with warmer weather bringing lots of Black flies. As the Summer approaches the trails dry up some and deer flies get very thick. Late in the Summer to early Fall the bugs go away and the trails are very dry .
This is perfect for beginners with some technical trails. Bills Belly and Raspberry trails are the most technical with steep hills and soft wet spots at bottoms.
There are trail maps at both Bargy and Wart roads. All trails lead out to town dirt roads so you shouldn't get lost.
ATV's ride through here frquently, even on trails that are illegal to them, but have always been kind. Some of the trails are shared with motorized vehicles.

Wart or Bargy road parking lot, then head North for various loops. Our favorites are Winona Way, Alices Alley, Tail Trail and the Gold Spike. Raspberry and Bills Belly most difficult in this system.
