There are several trails in and around Hempstead Park most of them were or are now bridal paths (that can be really soft/sandy in some parts) but you can find some firmer dirt singletrack there.

There are essentially two parts: the Rockville Centre area: south of the Southern State Parkway (So State Pkwy leads to and runs through the park) and the Hempstead area: north of the Southern State Parkway. Keep in mind the Hempstead side leads you to / through Hempstead which is not the nicest of neighborhoods.....the RVC side is very nice though. Riding either side after dark is not recommended.

Great for beginners / those working themselves back into shape after a hiatus. Not challenging or difficult at all but there are some bridal paths there that are soft and require shifting / strategy to traverse....

Not worth the trip for experienced people that would have travel far to get there ( I ride there because I grew up nearby and am now staying temporarily close by ).......

RVC Side;
Get off the Southern State Pkwy at exit 18 (Eagle Ave), RVC is to the right (south) and Hempstead to the left (north).....you can ride around two of the 3 lakes on single track in the woods with some fun roots and twists and turns, not much up or downhill on either side but the north (Hempstead) side does have a few little hills on trails off the main paths.

RVC:
Enter the parking lot on your right (off Eagle Ave) and go left as far as you can, park and ride to the larger lake on your right.......small trail kind of goes nowhere and you cant get all the way around the lake on it but its fun nonetheless.

Hempstead Side;
Get off the same exit (18, Eagle Ave) but go into parking lot on the right and then drive as far right as possible, cross the street and ride left or right - you can go around the lake on the north side of Eagle Ave completely and do laps.....If you cross north over the Southern State towards West Hempstead / Lakeview/ Malvern area there are a few little hills and you can ride deeper into the woods on more challenging and longer trails but there are some sketchy looking people lurking in the woods on the north side of the Southern St so beware...

Trail is basic. As stated its a horse path with another path around once you get to the East side of the lake. Several areas you can enter to ride close to the lake. A little more fun but nothing crazy. some deep sand areas that take some skill riding through. If you stay on the trail the ride is flat. There are 3 lakes if your interested there is a trail over roots and along the the smaller lake area with some trails entering the woods around the smaller lakes. Not well marked but you can see the path. Great for learning how to mountain bike. Root sections around small lakes would be the most challenging section and loops around so you can ride it over and over. There is a road that runs through the park so you can also get some road work in. As stated the park does get used on the summer. I live close and enjoy riding the path often as well as the tails. Beginner to beginner intermediate at best. Can increase the level of riding by dropping into the big lake through any one of the openings through the fence. No worries about getting in trouble its allowed.

Customer Service

Any parking lot will due. If you want to due the big lake I would go with the suggestion of parking lot closes to the southern state. IF you want to ride the path then the other side of the park is better. There is a soccer field and parking lot on the other side you can use.

If you live close by, why not? I wouldn't suggest going during the summer. The surrounding low income families crowd the park.

Customer Service

Start by the parking lot closest too the Southern State Parkway. Ride to the opening just south of the parkway along the horse tails and follow around the park.
