Oakley Corners State Forest (Newark Vally / Union Center) - Trail, Binghamton, York

Oakley Corners State Forest (Newark Vally / Union Center) - Trail, Binghamton, York

DESCRIPTION

Trails are managed and maintained by the NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation.... So they are free of most debris, fallen trees etc.... The terrain varies widely,...from relatively flat to some fairly steep hills,...dense pine to open wooded areas.... and among the 'South Trails', there are two pretty good sized ponds,....with trails running right along shore....

Oakley Corners has 2 completely different sections. The south section is fairly easy riding and somewhat flat. The North side is set on the side of valley and is amazingly fun if your into it. It is pretty technical with many rocky creek crossings. Its a good area to test your skills and your bikes strength. Most of the trails are well marked. In the spring and fall its wet and the mud is about knee deep. If your not swallowed by the mud you better watch out for the bugs. Overall Oakley Corners State Forest is awesome and has trails for just about any style of riding. The landscape isnt half bad either especially in the fall although all the leaves on the ground can make riding somewhat more technical.

Lots of singletrack on the north and south sides. South side keeps to a more constant grade but beware of all the routes. North side some very nice climbs and decents with far less roots, some more technical stuff also. All in all a very good place to ride, trail maps available at sign in on Hullsville/Dutchtown road intersection. Southside overall a 3.5, Northside trails get a 4.5

Customer Service

Southside trails 3,4,5,6 smooth rolling, 6 good technical, nice switchbacks. Trails 1 and 7 very root laden but still flow nicely. On Northside all trails in very good condition except trail 1 on the west side of the access road, kind of similar to riding in a creek bed. Enter in through 6 catch 3 then 4 and then back to 6, nice long ride with hard climbs but rewarding downhills.

Quite a bit of good singletrack. More than enough trails to get a great ride in. Fast and fun. One of the best places to get in a good x-country ride.

Customer Service

Almost anything across the road from the kiosk / map board.

This place is impressive! Too bad the DEC hasn't made trail systems like this in more state forests in NYS. Some technical sections on both yellow and blue trails and for the most part mostly dry even during the rainy days of April. Trails seem to be made to mix uphills and downhills at random so not to end up walking the bike for too long. Looking at the sign-in book it seems to get alot of use.

Customer Service

We took Y1 to Y2 to Y6 to Y1 and back to sign in area. Then took B1 to the B2 loop. Will check out the rest later.

This set of trails is my favorite that I've found in this area.(so far)...Because they are maintained,....clearly marked,....and have a real nice variety of terrain.... And there is enough trail to keep going for a few hours or so.... But,hey,.....you can make up your own mind,....but you'll have to go there first!....Check it out..... 'Ride On'.......and 'Happy Trails'.......My Freinds......

Customer Service

My best advice is to get a map(which are usually available there).Start at the beginning, and work your way through...All trails are numbered and color coded....

There is another state forest called 'Jenksville State Forest',...which is near Jenksville....(Duh?) But I've only been there once.....It wasn't as easy to find,...and I didn't think it was nearly as good as 'Oakley Corners'....But,...who am I to say?????

Some really nice single track here! The maps are great and keep you from getting lost. I ride there often and have yet to meet anyone else on the trail so crowded trails are never a problem. I've heard race rumors for this coming year. At the very least, it's most definately worth checking out.

Customer Service

Both the North and South sides of the forest are great. The lake side is definately less technical but much faster, the other side is some of the more technical that I've rode and a fair challenge.

South side is perfect for the beginner, wide open and not too technical. Some real good roots once you get down into the bottom, a few good climbs too. Watch out for the little wooden bridges that cross the streams,,,, slick like ice when wet!!!!! North side is lots more technical with a couple of good off camber trails and some good climbs. Maps are available at the sign in stand, bring lots of water and bug spray for this time of year!! Horseflys will catch you no matter how fast you ride!!

Customer Service

26 north to 38b west to dutchtown road, run right into it or 38 north to dutchtown road and again you run right into it

The trail around the pond is pretty easy... mostly hikers and parents with strollers... some parts can be technical. The trail on the other side of the road is pretty cool. Some intermediate downhill (or uphill).

Great trail system for all levels of riding. The beginner trails are fast but easy enough to bring newbies along. The intermediate and advanced trails are pretty technical with sharp turns and roots- lots of mud this time of year.

The north side offers some great singletrack, with great decents, climbs. Some technical sections over roots, rocks, and streams. The south side is pretty tame and is great for family riding, especially the pond loop.
While on the north side beware of narrow gullies crossing the trail, I've seen more than one person face plant on several of these.
