Mesa Trail (TR 13) - Trail, Socorro, Mexico

Mesa Trail (TR 13) - Trail, Socorro, Mexico

DESCRIPTION

Head out of Socorro, west, towards Magdalena on highway 60. After about 15 miles, watch for the "Water Canyon Campground sign on the right side of the road. Turn left up Water Canyon Road.Where the pavement ends, about 5 miles, the road splits, go left. This is the old campground and picnic area. Parking is on the east side of the road.

From the picnic area, ride 1/4 mile up FR 235. After crossing the cattle guard look for the trail head at the back of a pull-out on the east side of the road.

The trail climbs up the flank of the cliffs that form eastern edge of lower water canyon. The trail up to the top of the mesa is a mixture of technical riding and hike-a-bike, with only one trail intersection. At the intersection go right up the drainage. If you get to the old mine, you've missed the turn so backtrack to the drainage and try again.

Once you reach the top of the mesa the trail is marked with a lower case "i" blaze. Follow the blazes. There are two loops on top of the mesa. North loop stays on top of the mesa. South loop brings you back down to FR 235, directly across from the lower guard station.

One of the best. If you don't mind pushing for a half hour or more you will have a great time. This trail is pretty much a hike up and a ripping down with a little flowing singletrack in the middle. Pretty much everything in the Maggies is pretty rough/unmaintained, which makes it fun to ride, but keep your eyes forward and bike in control. Deadfall, iced creeks, talas, cows, bears; just keep an eye out. If you're near the Magdalena's check it out. 13 is one of the better trails as far as not getting lost if you're unfamiliar with the area.

A great trial in developed PiPo. Some hike-a-bike, but with great rolling single track on top of the mesa and a great descent down the south end of the trail. Easy to get lost if you don't mind the blazes, but that's half the fun. Watch the trees.

Up the breakdown on the western cliff wall. Do both north and south loops, drop down the south drainage. Stay off Dead horse trail ... brutally ugly, and no way out but back the way you came (or a loooooonnnngggg hike- a bike).
