Lower Quemazon - TRAIL

Lower Quemazon - Trail, Los Alamos, Mexico

Gnarly rocks, ruts, and roots. A technical riders dream. More fun up than down, IMO. 3.5 miles or so, point to point.

This is probably one of the most fun trails in all of Los Alamos, either going up or down it. The trail is steep and composed of solid rock for most of it. The climb is a challenge because of (i) the steepness and (ii) nonstop rocks, rock ledges, rock steps, etc...but it's a blast provided your lungs and legs can take the pounding. The descent is also a blast...flying down the same rock ledges you just climbed up. Be careful, though. If you endo, you'll likely land on solid rock.

The trail connects with pipeline road on the upper end a few miles below Guaje Ridge. So, it can be used as a way to get to Guaje, for those who like pain.

Customer Service

Take this up to pipeline, then follow pipeline up to Guaje Ridge for a great epic ride.

You can also take pipeline up to the top TH of Quemazon and then down Quemazon. Pipeline road isn't as steep of an ascent as Quemazon so it's not as painful.

This trail is great if you want to work on technical slickrock riding skills. It's mostly volcanic tuff, with lots of narrow pedal-technical ruts and big bumps. Downhill it's just bumpy, I think. But some people like it down.

Customer Service

You can take the Quemazon nature loop for an even more challenging ride - just follow the signs.

Start warm-up during the ride to the trailhead. Begin in the middle front chain ring for the first 1/4 mile. Then you must go to the smallest front and the middle rears for the remaining duration. Many volcanic tuff boulder riding. No slip for the rear tire. I recommend a hard tail or lockable rear on a full suspension. Great ride.
When you reach the top in about and hour, continue up Pipeline for an additional two hour accent and then down the "ski hill" road. (Pending snow cover) Or race downhill on Pipeline for a bumpy-scree induced wild ride. Definite brain buster, so wear a helmet.

Customer Service

No special route. Slow and steady with many wheelie requirements. Exceptional technical class trail.

I enjoy the trail each time I ride it. The welded tuff is so sticky, the traction so good its like riding the slick rock trail in Moab. But a lot more technical. You can ride the whole way up if you have the lungs and the legs...but that's the goal isn't it?

Customer Service

Don't stop at the end of the trail...ride the pipeline road (dirt) to the Guaje ridge trail!!!

As others have said, excellent technical ride! Great way to enhance the skills as well as learning to ride anaerobic. Possible to clean it in the middle chainring on a good day in about 35 minutes. Have fun!

Customer Service

Typical route up the technical trail. When it hits Pipeline Road, continue up!

For a quick before or after work ride there is not a better loop than up Quemazon and down the Knap trail into Los Alamos Canyon. Then its screaming single track to the resevoir and down the road at an even greater rate of speed to the ice rink.

Customer Service

Sames as listed but if your not going on up to the Guaje ridge trail or upper pipeline then you must return down quemazon. (or pipeline but I'd rather shoot myself). But there is a third option that people seem to overlook The Knap trail into Los Alamos canyon.

Ya.. This piece of single-track is beautiful! If the band Motorhead was a trail it could be this one. I can never get enough of this ride, some folks whine about it being a bumpy ride down. Well my advice is to go faster and forget about the bumps and get off on the endorphin induced orgasm! Now that there is no forest left the views are great and there is no shade in the summer.. oh well.. If you have questions about the rides in Los Alamos call DOME and ask for Scott.

Customer Service

Same as the other Recommended routes.. But towards the bottom it forks into a trail called the nature trail.. Killer section to hurt new riders.
