247-219 Porvenir - Trail, Las Vegas, Mexico

DESCRIPTION

The trail starts off wide and easy, and gets progressively more difficult the higher you climb. It's dark and shady with dense forest scenery. There's lots of moss, grass and a variety of types of trees and bird life. It's the kind of path us Arizona desert rats dream about in the Summer months. The trail follows a creek westwards and crosses it too many times to count. If you're not an expert creek crosser, you will be by the time you finish. I rode it in September, and it looks like the creek could be much deeper in wetter times of the year. The trail has many easy, ridable sections at a moderate grade, seperated by short, steep, very technical rocky sections that will have most riders pushing. The rocks are (predictably) much easier to clean on the way down. I encountered few hikers, even though it was a weekend. There are a great many downed trees along the route. I only explored it four miles up the canyon, but it's a long four miles. It could go on much further. I would rate it Intermediate for the easy parts and Extreme for the rocky parts. Much trail maintenance needs to be done. The path is easy to follow, but many fallen trees need to be removed, and a few sections rerouted. Prepare to get your feet wet. All in all, it's a lot more fun than it sounds, and it's downhill on the way back, as all good trails are.

I hiked this trail this summer and I say hiked because it is in a wilderness area. It is a good trail and would be a nice ride but is in wilderness area. The rangers in this area are overworked and never go there but still it's off limits.

There are lots of fireroads just south west of this area on/near Johnson Mesa which is in the Santa Fe national forest so mtb bikes are welcome. Alot of the roads go no where so keep track of where you are, it's easy to get lost.
