Quaking Aspen - TRAIL

Quaking Aspen - Trail, Gallup, Mexico

Just follow the single track up the mountain. You will go through ponderosa pine forests and up the occasional drainage ditch. There will be some trails that shoot off occasionally, but it's easy to pick out the main trail. And yes, the trail does go under one cattle fence... so don't be surprised. When you get to the top, you can go right on the dual track road to head back down. Or come back the way you went up if you want to take single-track back.

I am a SoCal rider that rode the loop from the Hilso Trailhead: Y2K>Turkey?>Lost Lake>Smokin’ Handlebars>Quaking Aspen in October 2013. What I wanted from these trails was singletrack with lots of trees and they delivered those two things. The route I took was 17 miles and 1100 ft elevation gain. Overall I enjoyed the trails but I don’t feel they are DESTINATION trails. If you live within 5 hours, you should check them out, but they lacked the flow of the High Desert Trail System and the adventure of the Milk Farm/Quasimoto loop. Parts of the trails were straight and not flowy. I just thought they were missing something (flow or stunts, give me soemething). The Quaking Aspen downhill was definitely fun and would highly recommend.

Customer Service

Be sure to visit the lookout on the Lost Lake Trail. Quaking Aspen was a fun XC downhill. Trail is well marked.

Technically, this a a short review of the Zuni Mtn Trail system (it might be called the McGaffey Trail System, too), of which Quaking Aspen is one of many trails out there.

We loved this area!!! Gallup Trails 2010 has been working hard out in this area building some really good stuff. Their website has some good info and maps. We started at the Hilso TH, but rode south down the road for a few miles. After it turns to dirt, you will find a small dirt ATV road just before an empty reservoir. I think this is the McGaffey TH. This is the beginning of Lower Sawmill trail, which was a blast. Generally downhill back towards the Hilso TH area, but on the east side of the road. Note: watch for a barbed wire fence crossing the trail. It can sneak up on you, but simply lift your bike over it and continue smiling on the narrow single track. This trail leads to Purple Haze, which is also a blast.

After crossing back over the highway, you can then start up the Milk Ranch loop. This trail, when ridden counter-clockwise, is up a gorgeous dry riverbed. You ride up to and around a great little cave and potential waterfall area (just add water). We turned off of Milk Ranch to Quasimodo, then rode up to the top of Berma. The Berma downhill trail, back to the Hilso TH, is awesome!!! Whoops, jumps, berms, etc. Your cheeks will hurt from smiling so much!!

This is all very good stuff, and the area is totally gorgeous. You can almost forget that Gallup is only 10 miles away. I understand they even have a 50- and 100-mile race in this area. We put in about 25 miles, and felt pretty wasted.

Customer Service

Hard to say. There are probably 80 to 100 miles of sweet, looping single track in this area. Just print a map, and go play. But I would say that you should point your bike down Berma rather than up. This would be a good place to camp and ride for 3-4 days.

This is a great trail system. Quaking Aspen is a fast somewhat technical trail is a boatload of fun.The Burma trail should be ridden from the top down (clockwise) as it includes a lot of whoops if you like getting a little air.
The trail system is well marked with signs at every intersection. Kudos to all that build and maintain this system! Plan on making a multiple day ride, as there's more that one can ride in one day.

Customer Service

issues mention about the signs have all been addressed. Just go through Fort Wingate up to the Hilso trailhead

although designated as part of zuni mountain biking (association, club, whatever) i was surprised about the signage of this trail....it seems there is more to this trail than reviewed below. in fact quaking aspen is just one trail in this complex. however after looking at an online map..(http://www.gallupnm.org/visitors/pdf/mcgaffey_map.pdf.)i was still very confused on the trail...

there is a distinctive TH on hwy 400 with trail signage....but it is misleading ...and for some reason the trail map is reversed as you head up trail....this map is very unreliable...and online searchs didn't help me.

having said all that ...the trail i rode was as reviewed by others.

i simply don't think i have to buy a book to ride a couple of trails in gallup.

local bike folks need to work on signage.

Actually ridden twice (in a row): it was that much fun. I have to give it a "4" overall only due to its proximity to the stellar High Desert Trail System. In terms of fun it's a "5", though. The woods and meadows are very pleasing, as is the quality of most of the genuine singletrack, with some of it showing its age. Interesting features include riding on the "bedrock" and coming as close as you can on a bike to flying back along the fenceline. For difficulty there are a few rock steps here and there and some short bits of loose. Rippin' fast or scenic slow, you will enjoy your time here.

Stan's directions in "Gallup Waypoints" couldn't possibly be improved upon. First ride "Quaking Aspen" #10, CLIMBING up the namesake trail then returning to the trailhead via Turkey Nest and Y2K Trails. Continue on through the trailhead to ride "Quaking Aspen Classic" #2 ultimately DESCENDING Quaking Aspen Trail.

The McGaffey Area trail system has recently (2007) been designated as a mountain bike system by the US Forest Service. Currently 26 miles of trail are under improvement (signage, cattleguards through fences, trailhead development) and an additional 40 miles are being prepared for future designation. Much of the singletrack has been in existence for 10 years or more. This is true cross country riding; flowing trails through a mixture of Ponderosa forest, open mountain meadows, logging railroad corridors, and rocky canyon drainages.

Customer Service

Take the Quaking Aspen Trail up to Sheetrock Tank, then return via Turkey Nest and Y2K trails. This loop is approximately 9 miles long and a good introduction to Zuni Mountain singletrack.

If you feel hardcore, try looping together Purple Haze, Milk Ranch, Quasimodo, Smokin Handlebar, and Quaking Aspen trails.

A copy of the Gallup Waypoints (gallupwaypoints.com) trail guide is a good idea.

Similar Products Used: Further back in the Zuni Mts. is the Twin Springs Trailhead, which gives access to many miles of primitive trail in the Rincon/Cottonwood Canyon area. These existing trails (game, cow, slickrock, logging, railroad) offer spectacular vistas, flowery mountain meadows, cool summer breezes.

The nearby High Desert Trail just north of Gallup is an excellent ride. During the hot summer months it's best to ride early or late. This trail has map/signs at all intersections, so you don't need a map to ride the trail.

This ride was on the tail end of a week trip- but what a nice last ride, and we liked! and even found a way to get lost- we tend to do that. We were riding it in a loop instead of coming back down the 3-4 mile climb up to the alpine lake- I will be back this year to ride some more trail in this area.
I thought the trail bed was excellent and beautiful place to ride.

This Trail is one of the best the Zuni Mountains have to offer. There are a lot more trails in this area since these were posted. Please check out: www (dot) gallupwaypoints (dot) com for the most comprehensive list of all the trails in the Gallup Area. There is ,also, a new bike shop (High Mesa Bikes and Gear) as the former SB has closed...

A 12" tread with a smooth groovy rythmn fast as you dare to go, a few short intense climbs thrown in on the otherwise gentle ups. The locals ride on Wed evenings and Sundays at 1 pm. Get details at the Scoreboard Bike Shop, Downtown Gallup.

Ride Quaking Aspen to the pond, then over the small wood bridge to Turkey Nest and Y2K, a scant 10 mile loop with a 3.5 mile climb and a 6.5 mile smokin' down.
