Without question some of the most unchallenging, boring, and plain flat trails i have ever ridden. if you are an intermediate to advanced rider and looking to step up your game, this is not the place for you.

This trail was fun for an intermediate like me. It also was the favorite for my girlfriend who isn't that into trail riding. SHe wants to come back out here. Watch out for deer in this section of the woods.

Mercer county park is more than just the Maze, but the Maze is probably what keeps most folks coming back. Mercer has a bad rap among folks I know because it's flat and not terribly aerobic. I've found you can make it as aerobic as you want, depending on where you go and how you approach it. Still, the greatest benefit I've gotten from Mercer is the low-speed balance work that you get in the Maze. Many times when I'm riding elsewhere, I've gotten through a technical section, and had to give a nod to Mercer for getting me that balance. There are different levels of difficulty, allowing you to work your way up. The flatness of the park also makes it accessable to all levels of rider. The flatness of Mercer also makes it ideal for folks who are just trying out singlespeeding. Don't have to deal with climbs, except for the dam, which can be done with enough speed coming into it. Just skip the ultra-wide bars popular with singlespeeding - you won't be able to ride the best parts of the maze! I also like ski-bend bar ends as bash guards. I've smashed fingers several times running without bar ends, but with them I usually deflect off the tree and keep going. Folks worry about hooking the bar ends, but frankly, if the tree is that far in on your bars, you're going down no matter what. Hardest I got thrown was with ultra-wide risers and no bar ends. Caught the edge of the bar with a tree and *voila* I'm flyin! Finally, big props to Mick and the SMART folks for the work they've done. I just started getting involved in the trail maintenance days and they've got some great plans in store.

Check out the official trail map on http://www.angelfire.com/nj2/smart17/ A good place for beginners to start in the Maze is the easier section starting in F9 - the yellow "Y" trail. Stops being maze-tight just before it crosses the red "R" trail in E10. However, it gets swoopy and fast and is a bunch of fun. The hardest Maze is found just above the start of the Yellow trail in F10. If you can make it through that trail without dabbing or leaning on a tree, you've got some good balance. Another maze-like section which can be taken pretty fast is what we refer to as the "Deer Trail" in H10. Runs between the West Picnic Area and Marina, and we often get to chase some deer through the woods. (thus our name for it) There's more, but just grab the trail map, hit the trails, and enjoy!

The Mercer trails were cut by a group of off-road motorcycle racers that live in the area. If you've ever ridden any dirt bike race in the woods in the northeastern U.S., then you can see the similarities. Some of the single track is so tight that you can't even fall over, cause' the trees will hold you up. Mostly flat, small elevation changes of no more than 5 to 15 feet. Some technical/trials (yes trials-logs on off cambers, etc...) type stuff, you just have to look for it (behind the tennis courts along the lake)! Many trails go all the way around the lake, but as mentioned by someone else, "stay off the golf course" (waist of good land)! Ride at night to get all the way around the lake and across the golf course.

any parking lot along the lake in the park. The tennis court parking is the least crowded, though the college girls sunbathe near the marina parking lot on sunny days!

This maze is mad fun to do. very tight. Me and my buddy's will do this trail like 4 times a week. we all live like 5 minutes away from the park entrance so its very convient.

Customer Service

Theres another way to get to this maze and alot quicker too. instead of going through the pavement cut though the field and you will see an opening with some rocks around it one of the rocks has a white paint on it just go through that and its on the first right.

The maze is the most twisted nonsense you'll ever ride! It winds though some dense, small trees, with some spaces less than 18" wide. A great place to practice your balance and develop slow-speed skills. Bar-end users will get hooked... and riser bar users... make sure you wear good gloves!

Customer Service

Park in the Southern-Most Lot. From there, you will find an entrance through an area of shaded picnic tables. Follow the trail to the left, then look for a well worn single track on your right. You'll find two sections of singletrack, ending out to a small bmx-like bowl with several great jumps. Then cross the bowel and follow singletrack into the MAZE!

Talk about hype. You would think that these reviews are about Moab, Utah. The maze is simply a single track through some closely spaced trees. It is flat, it is curvy, and it cannot be ridden very fast because the trees make it narrow. Is it awsome? No! it simply a trail through tightly spaced saplings. Check out Jim Thorpe for a challenge. Take your four year old to the maze.

First, I must say that I think Steve (above) found the wrong place :) Mercer is the God of biking, to me at least. Sure, it's not full of sweaty hills, but it's got challenge if you know where to look and easier stuff if you're in the mood for "leisure." Next, the "how often" dropdown box above doesn't have the heading I needed - "Several times a week!" I can't get enough of this park - I go an average of 3 times/week, and it just pains me that I'm 12 miles from it, so I have to wait 15 minutes or so before I can ride :)

Customer Service

I take them all! (all that I've found... so far... of which there must be dozens of separate entities). However, one I recently found (never attempted it before recently) was the full-lake route. Park at the Marina and head east. Find the trails through the two wood islands and then pass the tennis courts and find the entrance into the woods at the east entrance (end of dead end paved road) From there, you're on your way to a 10+ mile route around the whole of Lake Mercer. Enjoy, it's a *BEAUTIFUL* ride. Can't wait till the weekend :)

I've been to others but have to recommend - check out Mercer! Spend a few days there and your jaw will drop at how overwhelming the sheer number of trail opportunities there are here.
