Columbia Trail - TRAIL

Columbia Trail - Trail, High Bridge, Jersey

Former Centrail RR line (High Bridge line). Mostly dirt with some cinder base. Trail runs along side Lake Solitude and the South Branch of the Raritan River, giving the rider some of the best scenery of any NJ rail trail. Truly beautiful, and great for the family as there isn't more than a 2.5% grade on any part of the trail.

The trail starts at High Bridge and continues through Long Valley to almost Flanders. The section where Morris County starts is being improved with a new bed of crushed gravel all the way to Long Valley.

Customer Service

Start at the parking lot in High Bridge (farmers market on Saturday), contiune through Califon, the trail goes from good gravel to two track for a short distance to highway 513, you have to get on 513 North for about 100 feet then you can get back on the trail again to the left. Then it is about 5 more miles to Long Valley. At Long Valley it gets difficult to find where the trail begins again since there are some business that have built where the old rail bed was located. If you take Fairview Ave. for about 1/8 mile you can cut through some parking lots to get back on it again.

Not a difficult trail. About 7.5 miles long and it starts and ends in High Bridge or Califon; which makes pick up of drop off really easy. Perfect for the family, but nothing that is going to get your blood flowing. Marked every half or quarter mile.

Customer Service

Normally, I start in Califon and go have lunch in High Bridge and bike back. The califon enterance is on or near Vernoy Road, but it goes through califon anyway, so you can start there.

The section after leaving High Bridge up to Hoffman's Crossing has great scenery for a rail trail in Jersey. After that the trail continues but just isn't as pretty. This rail trail is enough to make for a good family outing

This is probably the best trail in New Jersey; well-maintained and perfect for casual nature riding. Complement the trip by making a "U-turn" in Califon to the Ken Lockwood Gorge Trail (which runs parallel to the trail between High Bridge and Califon, closer to the river). Ride along side the fly fisherman half-submerged in the river.

A great day trip. This is a very scenic trail with great views looking 60 feet down to a river, steep rock walls, and tons of trees. The trail is very easy to navigate on. Not much grade variations.

This trail is excellent. I've taken my family on the trail and travelled to Califon from the High Bridge end of the trail, and the views are beautiful. It overlooks Lake Solitude and the South Branch of the Raritan River. Pretty flat, too, so don't be afraid to take kids. Not very challenging for aggressive riders.

Customer Service

Start in High Bridge on Main Street and travel north.

A great, if not rough ride, the trail is washed out in some areas so be careful. There can be some confusion in the upper part of the trail so keep your eyes open for markers. It should be note that some of the trail actually covers open road (Rt. 513) but the traffic was light. Wonderful vistas and a real education in railroad trails.

Started at High Bridge and went to the trail head
