TURKEY SWAMP PARK - TRAIL

TURKEY SWAMP PARK - Trail, Freehold, Jersey

THE MAIN FITTNESS TRAIL IS EASY BUT A NICE WORKOUT. OTHER TRAILS CONSIST OF LONG SINGLETRACK RUNS DEEP INTO THE WOODS. A PLACE YOU CAN GET LOST IN. THERE ARE MANY LONG SINGLETRACK TRAILS THAT ARE ALOT OF FUN SOME HILLS GREAT TERRAIN IF YOU CAN FIND THEM.

My son is playing soccer nearby, so I'm going to try riding this park. I did find a trail map at this url,

I just moved down to the area and was looking for a place to ride. I checked out Turkey Swamp and actually enjoy it. It is pretty flat, so there is a lot of pedaling and you can easily put together a couple of miles of trail riding. It is a fun cardio type of park. But if you are looking for technical this is NOT the park for you. If you are looking to just get outside and pedal pedal pedal, then this is a fun little place. The back sections get muddy even if there is a hint of rain. Also while riding there, enjoy the wildlife. Packs of deer are usually around, and they don't call it Turkey Swamp for nothing...there are lots of them noisy birds as well.

I drove 50 minutes to check out this trail in the summer of 2005. The trails appeared virtually unused. I kept going down different trails, but they would inevitably turn into an unpassable mass of brush, fallen trees, or sand. The well-used trails were directly adjacent to the camping areas and were used for a lot of hikers and general camper foot traffic. There appeared to be some potential for decent beginner trail riding, or a place to bring your girlfriend, but in good conscience, I cannot recommend this trail based on what I experienced last year. Until this place gets regular use (by locals) or some maintenance, don't waste your time.

Go back to I-195. 9 miles east to exit 31 for Allaire. Or 11 miles west to exit 11 for Clayton.

Similar Products Used: Allaire, Clayton are much better options nearby. Ringwood is the best in NJ. Hartshorne, Six Mile Run, Huber, Sourlands, and Chimney Rock, of course.

All is about the same as my posted review of April 2002 except now some portions of the trails where there was thorns have been 'hacked' away apparently by some kind of motorized bush clearer. Also there are parts of the trails that hold rain water more than before because of deep crevices without sufficient drain off.

Customer Service

Same as review of April 2002.

Turkey Swamp is not very technical, but can be a good cardio workout. I usually go there on the weekdays because it's not very crowded and it gives me time to work on hopping, powerlifting, wheelies, etc... in preparing for more technical courses which I goto on the weekend (chimney rock hartshorne etc) Don't drive anything over a half hour to get here.. I'm sure there are places closer that can offer the same thing.

Customer Service

There are some nice trails by the docks on the pond... take the trail to the left of the docks when facing the water. There are some steps near the docks as well and there are also some steps by the trail to the left of the docks.. these are to practice hopping off of and climbing. I usually do several runs in a row

nice workout. one of the better parks central jersey has to offer. main trail is a nice ride around the lake wood bridges to cross for beginer riding. fire roads have nice terrain. there are other trails all over the park which can be hard to find but are nice if you like singletrack trails, lots of turns, hills, bumps, logs, ditches etc. can be difficult at times. easy to get lost but most trails are marked. i go there for a fun ride which it will give you.

main fittness trail easy. during the week its great you have the woods to yourself. the deep woods trails are hard to find but were worth looking for. i felt like i could get lost real easy though. the trails should be marked better. other than that its a one the best parks in the area.

This place is nice and peaceful not many others getting in your way. there are miles of trails all over the woods, which i have no idea where the lead to. anyway the terrain is great for singletrack riding with good room to manuvere. except for some unmarked areas which i would have liked to venture but didnt want to get lost i have a great time there. i ride everywhere in nj this spot is nice. i felt is wasnt as challenging as i would have liked but hey we are in central nj.

i am from utah and think the riding in this state is a joke. i really shouldnt compare the two states because there is none.well in a nj point of view this place has a lot to offer in the single track range. it is fairly easy but fun to ride. i like the fact that there is no one in sight in the back trails. ive ridden all over this state and every thing is the same this place just has nice single track runs good for tech. work and a great work out around the lake/swamp i guess. thanks for finding this place for me its right by my house. i plan to ride here alot. my rating is on a nj standard
