Northgate Loop - Trail, Reno, Nevada

Northgate Loop - Trail, Reno, Nevada

DESCRIPTION

Starting from the trail head follow the fire roads around the new housing development in a northeast direction. Eventually there will be a short section of singletrack splitting off to the left (north). From there you will follow a counter clockwise loop of mainly singletrack until the last few miles when the trail turns back into dirt roads. There are many intersections along the trail, but just follow the main path (it is pretty obvious in most places).

Hahaha I rode it the other day. There was very little left and it was fun cutting through construction and they got mad. Yeah I will give technical a five cus you have to dodge the trucks and bunny hoping the houses is pretty hard.

At one point, I rode this trail once or twice a week and used to know every inch. It is a very good trail for beginner riders who want to improve their singletracking skills. (Most of this trail is singletrack). For more experienced riders, the challenge is seeing how fast you can complete the ride. This trail has seen a LOT more press since I rode it regularly and visits back find trail maintenance (good) and some seriously rutted/travelled-out sections (hint to beginner riders: the back brake is not the only brake on your bike, and is not best used when it is locked.)
This is a pretty fun trail and is worth riding at least once. 4 chilis because I still love this trail and it is fun, but no more because it's not super-hard.

This is the location of the soon to be famous Peavine Challange of the Kooka Cup race series. It's a great trail of mostly singletrack (like Griff said). There really isn't much climbing (maybe 500') but it's damn rocky and really hot. They are in the process of building new subdivisions up here so the trail is likley to chage, especially the areas near McQueen. Just remember that it is a loop and you can see Northgate nearly the entire way. It makes it very difficult to get lost. Go the renowheelmen.org for more info on the kooka cup race series.

Start at McQueen high school and go to the top of Robb drive. Head up the fire road past all the trash and then veer east towards nothgate. Go over the small ridge and follow the singletrack all the way until it goes past northgate and starts to head towards interstate 80 (at this point you'll be above Mogul). Now follow the power line on the fire road and start looking for the singletrack off towards the right. Follow that singletrack towards mogul. At this point you'll be near northgate and you'll follow the course until you get near the houses. Loop around and meet up with the trail near Robb drive. Follow it down the canyon back to McQueen high.

This trail is one of my least favorite. It's dusty, hot, rocky, and boring. The views of the golf course are nice, but don't make the trail worth riding, especially with so many other trails in the area. We spend half the time sucking up exhaust fumes and dust from motorcycles and quad racers.

Customer Service

There are no-trespassing signs posted at the end of Robb Drive. Turn left at the sign for Northgate golf course off of Robb drive, and start at the end of that street if you care.

Followup to previous review:
Northgate Loop has been severed! Coming back to this trail after a long time away, I found that the first 3/4 of the trail is faster with more banked turns. Although some sections were a little travelled out, the majority of the trail was better than I remember. (There were no motorcycles or quads, just miles of fast dirt).
HOWEVER, there has apparently been some recent construction because around 2 miles from the end of the ride, a 200 meter-wide road has been plowed across the trail. The road is deep dirt and hard to traverse. If I was a regular to this trail, I'd find an alternate route (I'm sure one exists by now). For those regulars, be forewarned, there is construction in the middle of the trail, and the ride has changed! It's too bad, this WAS a rippin trail.

This used to be Reno's best trail. Until the developers destroyed it. Several sections are now completely obliterated, making it impossible to ride it completely through. It's too bad, cuz if this is how Reno Gov't is spending their dollars from the new parks and recreation bonds they instituted, Reno's trail will all be gone soon. I was willing to help rebuild or redirect the trail ,but local riders and LBSs just threw their arms in the air and said, "aint nothin we can do." Oh well, maybe someday the Northgate Loop will be redeveloped.

Customer Service

Start the loop at either the end of Beaumont or that "other" starting point, just ~0.2 miles NE of the end of Beaumont. Follow the single track and when you hit a fire road, just follow the bike tracks until more singletrack appears.

Northgate is now almost officially gone. Thanks to Q&D who have run there bulldozers over every highlight on this once great ride it is now done for. Track homes are being built all over it. All I have left now is the memories :( Maybe it will be rebuilt and rerouted when all the construction is done.

Customer Service

None. North Gate is dead.

Completelty gone. I tried to ride this trail about 3 months ago and when i was coming back down what used to be a great canyon singletrack, the construction workers thought it would be in their best intrest to hose us off with a water truck. well, got the truck number, and a lawsuit is currently pending. I give it 5 tires cause its where I learned how to ride singletrack.

Customer Service

there is none.
