Amargosa - Trail, Henderson, Nevada

Amargosa - Trail, Henderson, Nevada

DESCRIPTION

Trail head @ Shaded Canyon Dr. and Horizon Ridge. Singletrack with enough switchbacks to lose count of, built by the City for hikers, bikers, dog walkers. Not the best flow, but a good cardio workout! Really nice if you live in the area and don't feel like driving to Bootleg.

Rode the trail 2 days ago from Mission to Shaded Canyon and beyond. The MTB portion is exactly as described by Locolawyer. Ensure you follow the I-beam markers as it's easy to get off the trail.

Customer Service

The trailhead out of Hidden Hills is for a deadend hiker trail, not the MTB trail.
Do not take the right onto Horizon Ridge from Shaded Canyon TH, but look at the I-beam marker at the exit for the map which sends you now left to connect to the Paseo Verde trail west.

There is now a trailhead at Mission Dr. named McCullough Hills which has an 8 mile trail heading southwest from there. I plan to ride it this week.

This trail is definitely not a beginner trail! It is waaay too steep, the switchbacks are very sharp, and penalty for a mistake in some places is a steep tumble over large rocks. The trail is ride-able from Mission Drive or Hidden Falls Park (if it ever opens) to Shaded Canyon. If you can climb like a goat and have wicked mad switchback skills you can clean it both ways, otherwise from Shaded Canyon back to Mission you'll wind up pushing for a bit (still not too bad). Not as crazy as the downhills at bootleg, but still plenty technical, and a lung burner, although with the up and down its like interval training ;) for sadists!

Customer Service

I ride out and back from the end of Mission Drive (closest cross street is Roseholm Way)to Shaded Canyon; I do have to walk a couple of the sections on the return. It's just under 6 miles total It takes me 90 minutes on average.
I also ride from O'Callaghan park. From there I exit the park on the Souteast corner onto Summerland heading South, Left on Tamarack, Right on Greenway, Right on Mission. Go West on Mission all the way to the end. Follow the irrigation ditch North .3 miles to a small bridge over the ditch, cross it and follow the dirt trail to the right. in another .3 miles you reach the trailhead at the as yet unopened Hidden Falls Park. Amargosa Trail ends at Shaded Canyon Dr., ride down the hill and turn right on Horizon Ridge, then the take the first left at Las Palmas Entrada. Just before you get to Acacia Park access the trail that follows the train tracks and head East (right). follow this trail under the freeway, behind Burkholder M.S., and past the back nine at Black Mountain Country Club. Turn Right on Greenway to Horizon and the park is a block the the right.

There are lots of trails South of Amargosa trail behind the big detention basin and off of the Pipeline road. Unfortunately they all wind up in sandy, loose gravel washes that are impossible to ride or were made by motorcyclists climbing straight up 45 degree inclines. Of course you can ride the pipeline road, but its dusty, rocky and basically sucks.
