N.Y. Canyon - Trail, Eureka, Nevada

N.Y. Canyon - Trail, Eureka, Nevada

DESCRIPTION

A fairly easy ride that should take less than an hour for moderately fit riders. From U.S. 50 southeast of Eureka, go up Windfall Canyon Road, a wide, bland fire road, about 1.8 miles. To the right you''ll see a doubletrack that ascends out of the canyon. Climb it to a crest, and thereafter descend into New York Canyon. You''ll see several junctions; as I recall, you should stay to the right at each one. New York Canyon Road takes you back to U.S. 50, and from there you can ride back to Eureka. Although the ride is quite suitable for beginners, summer heat, afternoon thunderstorms, and winter cold can be hazards, and although the climbing is gentle, the altitude may be taxing. The ride is best done in the morning to avoid electrical storms.

Not an exciting loop, but a good place to stretch one's legs when driving from the Bay Area to Colorado or vice-versa. Has a few scenic spots.

Customer Service

As described. The next time I'm in Eureka, I want to find out if one can ride to the peak with the microwave towers that looks like it's about 3000 feet above town and is visible from parts of it. I'm not sure how to do this, or if there's open access to that peak.
