Simpson Creek - Trail, Deer River-Grand Rapids, Minnesota

Simpson Creek - Trail, Deer River-Grand Rapids, Minnesota

DESCRIPTION

Mostly rolling some of it could be called single track but it's mostly narrow cross country ski trails and some old grown up logging road. The grass wass long on parts of it. Very nice scenerary through the pines. There aren't any killer climbs but it's still a pretty good workout. Be sure to grab a map because there are alot of intersections and it could be confusing.E-mail me if you want to ride in the Grand Rapids area we've got some other pretty decent rides in the area.

The Simpson Creek Trail system has 20k of non-motorized trail, with good opportunities to view bald eagles, osprey, and loons during spring through fall. The trail takes the visitor through red and white pine and along glacial eskers. Overlooks onto beautiful Cut Foot Sioux Lake, ans journeys into cedar swamp, show the diversity of the Cut Foot Sioux Area. In 1907, Sam Simpson was successful in obtaining a large contract for logging the pine from the Cut Foot Sioux area and started moving a camp and equipment into the region. The firsr roads into the area, no more than tote trails people used for hauling, were built by Simpson's crew. Simpson's headquarters camp was on Simpson Creek.

Customer Service

From Deer River, take State Highway 46 17 miles to the Cutfoot bridge. Soon after you wil come across the Cutfoot ranger station. Of the trail's many accesses, this one is easiest to access and has a paved parking lot. Be sure to pick up a trail map. A few things you should know: the bridge crossing Simpson Creek is underwater(beavers can cause alot of damage)between points T and M on the map. Take the trail to point S and ride Eagle's Nest Road for a short distance and get back on at point B. Basicly, all the trails are pretty just avoid the southern most loop because it is really grassy and grown in. Be sure to bike Seelye Point at the western most part of the trails at point W. The trail around point R is pretty, too. You can download a trail map at http://www.fs.fed.us/r9/chippewa/flyer/pdf/simpson_creek.pdf

Good Trails, but watch out for the horse flys in the summer time. Best times are fall and early spring. The trails are fairly easy and rolling. There are more trails that connect up to this trail system, so you can ride 13 miles or all day.

Beautiful area to ride. Needs more PR. Very good for new riders or families. Good workout on west side, trails are wide, and not real complicated. Big plus: Campgrounds located on or very close to trail. Connects with Cutfoot Sioux and Pigeon Lake trail loops.

Customer Service

Leave Visitor's Center on paved trail, and turn right about 100 feet down the trail. Take a trail map! There are a number of connected loops.
