This is one gourgeous trail. The route is not so much
spectacular in itself; it's tree lined and somewhat
isolated. What sets it apart is the picturesque gurgling Paint Creek. You almost want to stop and just
take the whole setting in.
That being said, the trail is hardpack, probably clay,
and all downhill from Lake Orion. Really the trail is
only one step above your local metropark, where you
can ride with gramps. You get the idea. Also there are
tons of pedestrians.
But it sure is purty.

If you want to go for a nice casual ride in scenic terrain, try Paint Creek. Trail is hardpack and busy, road bikes can travel with ease. If you want to go mountain biking, go somewhere else.

This trail can be deceptive! At first glance it may seem to be a pretty boring. Just a straight and flat strip of gravel. But don't let that fool you. An all day adventure can be had here.
Along the section that runs from Rochester to Lake Orion, there are a couple of side trails. One is close to Rochester. It is covered in wood chips and has a wood bridge that crosses over the creek. Another side trail exists closer to Lake Orion that has some interesting terrain for BMX freaks. Also from this section, routes can be found that lead to both the North and South trails of the Bald Mountain Rec area .
The lesser known section of Paint Creek accually runs south of Rochester. From the city park in Rochester, head south on the main trail. The trail will turn into a concrete path that goes underneath Main Street then follows the creek untill University Rd. Turn left and climb the hill up to Elizabeth st. Turn right and continue to 2nd street. Turn left. Go down 2nd untill you see a path heading off to the right. Take that path (turns into gravel) across the rail tracks and across a wooden bridge. You are now on the second section of the rail trail.
This is were it gets interesting! You can continue down the gravel trail and end up across the road from Yates cider mill (to bad there's no bridge to cross over the river here). Or you can explore the many miles of sincle track that weave along the river and woods.Including the Bloomer park trail system.
Yes, this "trail" can be a lot of fun! Just remember that there are usually a lot of people using the trail. Go on crappy days or off hours to avoid the masses...

Flat! The main trail is flat and straight throughout the entire trail, and boring. If you wanna have a little fun on this trail, go off along the side of the trail through the woods (bring bug spray!). Also, before you reach the cider mill (if you start at the Rochester Park)there is a pretty big switchback to your right, and some nice jumps. Also, behind the hill, there are some alternate trails that lead off.
Also, stop at the rivers, I dont remember at which bridge it was, but at one of them, some kids tied a rope swing to a tree branch overhanging the river.

If your going to ride Paint Creek, dont just stick to the main path. Cut through the woods, and explore and try to go as far as you can without getting lost.

This one is good to start the season out. Get the fatty Michigan legs ready for the real stuff. Make sure you check out "Suicide" (in between Gunn and Adams rd.) You can putz around on the little BMX hills for a while. If you are really daring take the "Suicide" challange. Look out for all of the roots left from the water damage!! Stop off in downtown and check out all of the little hottie soccer Moms.

Really nice to ride on, and it gives you just enough of a work out. Riding down 4 or 5 miles and back, great for exercise, and is nice to stop and sit at the edge of the trail, or on one of the benches, and just relax to the sound of the creek and the animals. Even easy accessable from Paint Creek Ridge Subdivision, making it a nice bike ride for the entire family, as long as little ones don't mind riding a distance. The little ponds along the way make a great resting place for kids to stop and learn about wild life (such as fish and frogs and toads).

Customer Service

To go from (roughly) down town Lake Orion to the cidermill and back. Start from either behind the old Marco's pizza place, or from Clarkston and Kern roads.

This is the first time I have ridden in many years so this was a good place to start. I live very close to the trail and had never been on it - so I figured it was time. I didn't really like the way the trail ended in Lake Orion. . .I wasn't sure if I had reached the end or not. . .basically it ends in the parking lot of a pizza shop. I would think the city there would want to make something out of the trail . . . but I guess not.

The "Motorcycle jumps" were removed by the fun police, as of last year. I believe that someone was fearing a lawsuit, as it was on private property.

I ride couple times a week pulling my 3yr old daughter.
Going to Rochester is not bad at a good pace.
Coming back, You do not see the elevation change, but you climb 350+ ft. over a 5 mile stretch. A hidden training burn. Smiles all the way. It can be as easy or as touph as you make it. Go ahead and push yourself. You will have numb legs, especially if you do like me and pull an extra 35 lbs behind you.
There are many spots to stop and inhale nature, and share with a impresionable child. All Positive....
