Bareback - TRAIL

Bareback - Trail, Marquette, Michigan

this is arguably the most technical trail in the area. it is a gruelling hour spent on open rock. your first time expect to walk, lots. numerous sick, sick drops.

You may find a bike an inconvenience at times on this trail unless you're a trials rider, but you'll sure miss some fun if you don't have a bike.

Customer Service

Park across from the boat landing. This trail and then Jedi both going counter clockwise are a great ride. This way you get the best downhill, and then you get the long Jedi downhill run and back to your car.

Pretty damn technical. Not a ride you just go out and do. Plan a day to enjoy (the view), change flats, smoke bowls, take pics, and eat some snacks. Rocky debris for most of the first part (walking), then some intense drops. Have fun.

Customer Service

Go with JonJon's route. Harlow gravel pit around to the edge of Harlow lake.

Similar Products Used: Also see JonJon's detailed info, but I would say all the Harlow area is amazing. Not used as much as Marquette's south trails.

When people come from out of town looking for the most technical and scenic ride I bring them to Bareback. This is Marquette's premier ride with all the aspects you would come to expect from the areas natural beauty. Bareback consists of tight singletrack, rock drops, log rides, and big smooth granite outcropings. This is not a trail for beginners as they will walk the majority.

Customer Service

co.rd. 550 to gravel pit, take first right on two track go to the second trail marked with a blue sign. You will need a trail map of the Harlow Lake area to return to your car or Marquette.

I had the pleasure to ride this trail with some good local riders when I was up there for two days. It was great fun, would have been even more if it hadn't been raining earlier in the day. Nothing like slick rock. It's the most intensely technical trail I've ever ridden. It's a truely unique ride and destine classic. Virgin Terrain too.

Similar Products Used: Also rode the south shore or southies, whatever they call it. It's just a complete playground of never ending high speed, technical, tabogan ravine runs, log crossings, and climbs.

This trail might be fun...if you could find it! Maybe some of the people who brag about how great riding in the Marquette area is should get out and mark some trails so others without local guides could find and enjoy some riding up there. I would caution anyone against going to Marquette to find decent riding on your own. It can't be done.

Customer Service

It's a local secret!

UNREAL UNREAL. I went with a freind of mine looking for a tough and tech ride. WOW it was insane I will admit that you will have to walk some to most of it esp in the begining. But holy &^*%&%$^$^$ that trail is insane. Amazing views and unreal drops, and sick freeriding. GREAT JOB OUT IN Marquette.

Customer Service

The route that they talk about in the begining is right on. Thanks for the directions

Similar Products Used: North Country trail. Great ride to just rip it up on. Not as narly as Bareback. GET OUT TO MARQUETTE THE BEST RIDING IN THE MIDWEST BY FAR.

I'm an XC rider used to tight technical hard pack. When our group stumbled upon Bare Back I wished I had a full suspension bike with at least 100mm of travel in the front. Full pads would've been nice too. I arrived with a hardtail equipped with clipless pedals and found myself walking most of the way. The views from the top are spectacular. Rumor has it there is a guy in town who can clear the entire route without puting his feet down. It's very hard to believe, given how aggressive this trail is.

Customer Service

The directions were pretty good. We stayed up the road a bit at Harlow Lake campsite.

Similar Products Used: Bring the right equipment and it will be a trip you won't soon forget. My rating is only low because my experience was hampered by not having the right tools for the job.
