After reading a couple of articles about "Boblo Island" as the locals call it, I decided to check out this remote island next to Mackinaw Island. First, to get to Bois Blanc, you have to take a ferry from Cheboygan. The number for the ferry service is 888-PLAUNTS, cost for one adult and a bike was around $15 to and from the island.
Once on the island you can head off either left or right and you are riding on hard packed gravel. These last for about 10 miles in either direction, then they turn into a two track on the north side of the island. This is the part serious riders will enjoy most though it is not really technical. The terrain is mostly flat, with lots of roots and rocks, but you can build up some good speed and there are some small rises. The trail on the north side runs in the woods, about 50ft from the beach. It is very scenic, save for the occasion 4x4 or ATV. I only rode the loop around the island which was 35 miles. There are miles of trails in the interior of the island which are also a combination of two track and gravel road. The bugs were bad, but bug spray worked well. The side trail to Lighthouse Pt. is a decent two mile ride.(there and back to the main trail) The main appeal for me was the isolation of the island, supposedly there are only 45 permanent residents, but there are a number of cabins/cottages on the island, though there is only one store/resturant on the island...at least that I saw. There are cars on the island and you do have to pay a bit of attention when you are on the gravel roads as they will sneak up on you if you start getting lost gazing at the scenery like I did. Though it is not the most challenging bit of riding I've done from a technical standpoint, the distance made up for it for someone who is used to riding six-eight mile loops downstate. The loop could be done by beginners, but you had better have a front shock, or your arms will fall off on the north side.!!! The only real bad stretch of the loop is the northeast corner of the island where gravel was recently put down. It was so loose that it was practically impossible to ride and I had to walk the bike for about .75 miles.

Left or right from the ferry, but my buddy insisted that we were constantly going up hill having rode to the left and that next time we would start riding to the right.
