Black Mountain - TRAIL

Black Mountain - Trail, Cheboygan, Michigan

Originally a ski resort, the area was purchased by the state and made into an under-utilized recreation area. There are miles of fairly well-marked two-track trails winding up and down the hills. Some parts are moderate, while others are more steep. There are also two three-sided structures which won't keep you warm , but will allow you to wait out a rain shower. the area is excellent for cross-country skiing. I would recommend bringing along water and a compass for any ride. Be forewarned that there are ATV trails in the area too. They are not allowed on your trails, but I have seen some damage from a few who didn't stay on their own trail system. There is a bed and breakfast nearby, along with several rustic campgrounds. Have fun!

This area provides a great workout in the summer or fall! You will probably have the whole place to yourself, as it is kind of isolated. Let someone know where you are going, before you head out. There is a b&b near the trailhead, though a bit expensive. They have good coffee. I think breakfast on Sunday is about eight bucks. Ouch!

Start at the trailhead off of Twin Lakes Rd. Look for the little wooden box, which should have some trail maps in it. Once you start riding, bear to the right. This will take you along a grassy old two-track, which winds up and down, but gradually climbs higher. After about 2 miles, the trail should cross a fire road which runs perpendicular to the trail. Turn left and ride for about 1 mile to Black Mountain Road. Turn left on Black Mountain Road. You should reach a rather high speed on the steep downhill section of this little-travelled road (Did you adjust your brakes before starting out?) Black Mountain Road will end at a decent gravel road (Which is actually Twin Lakes Rd.) Turn Left and follow this easy ride to the original trailhead. I think this is about 6 miles altogether.

This trail offers lots of possibilities for a workout. I like to combine the trails with a few miles of steep downhills on gravel roads. You can fly down Black Mountain Road! Beware of the steeper trails...

I have never found any good riding at Black Mountain. If you are looking for some serious riding go to Boyne or shingle Mill Pathway. See the review of these trails for more info.
