Cat Rock Park - Trail, Weston, Massachusetts

Cat Rock Park - Trail, Weston, Massachusetts

DESCRIPTION

Real mild mostly, good beginning terrain. Watch out for broken beer bottles! :) The "Cat Rock" is a former ski hill, with a trail straight up (great workout, real Chain buster), and a meandering trail down

As usual the truth is somewhere in the middle.. I live about 2 miles from these trails. I used to work in the Verizon offices that border the trails. To summarize, these trails are good enough that I will often ride them just because I can ride to the trailhead rather than packing up in the car. The old ski slope is steep enough and long enough (It is at least 200ft elevation change) that only a very fit rider with a perfectly set up bike is going to be able to climb it, and even then only by snaking up the hill. The direct route that has been worn in by hikers is strictly experts only stuff. The descent is a piece of cake but the climb is very difficult. There are also several rocky areas that are quite dangerous hidden away in the woods, that should be a challenge to many. (I don't bother trying to ride them as I am more of an XC guy) On the negative, the trails through the fields are very poorly laid out, so they get muddy and flooded very easily. In the summer the fields are not mowed, and they get overgrown and extremely buggy. Watch out if you're allergic to bee stings as there are tons of them. There are also a lot of "Pro" dog walkers who can be extremely annoying. You'll often see someone with 10 dogs that are totally out of control, and they'll go ballistic if you ask them to try and keep the dogs under control. The trails are not NEMBA quality, there are annoyances, etc.. but the bottom line is you can get a decent workout and there are some tough spots. It is also a quick ride over to prospect park across 128 for some additional trails & climbing. Again nothing special but between these two places and some of the roads in the area, you can get a pretty good climbing workout.

Just ride everything, there isn't that much. Then ride some of the neighborhoods over on 117 for some climbing, then go towards waltham on Rt. 117, turn left onto Bear Hill Rd, hit the hills there, and then go right onto wyman? road and head over to Prospect hill for some more nice climbing.

Yo Eddy!

It's small, but there are some exelent sections. Trails range from blitheringly simple to trials with two hard climbs, a few scarry downhills, some twisty singletrack and all the sticker bushes you can eat.

In from the back entrance behind Polaroid, drop into the main part of the park from the always overgrown trail that starts at the look out rock. Up the three pitch climb to the top of the old ski slope, down the face, off to the right side. Turn left off the main trail, into the wetland trails, over the bridge towards the GTE owned section. There's a second ridge where the dish antena was (now construction area), the technical down side trail brings you back to the center of the park.

Being from Weston, I have to be a little bias, never the less, I love this route. I ride it several times per week and never tire of it. It's like having a neighborhood bike shop, you can't knock the thing just becuase it can't compete with superpowers. The same with cat rock. It can't compete with Vietnam or Lin Woods, But it truly is a wondeful circuit. Ride it once and bomb the downhill. Anyone who says the trail sucks because it's too easy, I'd like to see them ride the face in one swoop.

Customer Service

Go in by way of the baseball diamond then turn right over the bridge, take the first right and ride to the pond. Ride over the bridge and then stay straight and take your first left through a little rock field and then you'll see the steep uphill. Go to the top and you've made it.

ok i grew up in weston so i'm biased. and to be honest once i could drive and knew where lynn and nam and blue hills were i didn't ride at cat rock so much. but it's pretty good. the loop described hits everything worth riding. there is potential for some good hucking style cliff bands on the first downhill described and on the cliff band on the second loop described. if you're a beginner, there's all types of horse paths and crap like that to ride too. all of the people who said it sucks just didn't know where they were going. I'm goin g to give it a 4 becaus it's a good place to build huckin and downhilling skills when you're all oldschool and don't have a car or a fullsuspension.

Park at the baseball diamond at the end of drabbington way. look west...there's a big hill. there is a trail out in left field. go left on that and up the big ski hill. Go past the top of the ski hill and down. There is a little bit of twisty singletrack that has some good granite. potential for a big clean drop if some trailbuilders ever got their act together. At the bottom of this you'll hit a road. so turn around and go back the same way you came til you get to the top of the ski hill. ride down the granite summit and take a left, along the double track towards the upper parkinglot. Take a right onto some rocky twisty singletrack downhill. HTe rocks are not so big, and there's only one decent jump, but it's fun. when you get to the bottom, go left, and you'll be in a field. Ride north until you get to the end of the field, and then turn right. There should be a path mowed to a trail at the edge of the woods. Follow that--it is a little loop that actually leads to a smaller summit that has a bunch of good rocks with dropoffs, similar to lynn but much less and on a smaller scale. When you hit the granite sections, if you look left, there are a bunch of sorta rideable lines off a cliff. There is no trail but they are rideable. eventually you'll finish that loop and be back in the field. go back to the base of the downhill off the big summit. keep going on that road till you see the baseball diamond

It is pretty good for beginers and intermidiate riders. I just came back from whistler and it is nothing like that, but it's close and fun.

Customer Service

start at the baseball diamond. Take a left when you see the trail. Go up the big hill, so your almost at the top of cat rock. You will see a trail on your right that you should take. Once you get on this trail it will take you to a gravel road, when you get to the road take an imediate right onto a small trail. This trail is pretty good downhill with a lot of rocks and roots that you have to work around. Stay on this trail and it will take you all the way around the lake, and eventually back to the baseball diamond.

Customer Service

This was my first time on this trail and didn't have a whole heck of alot of fun. The climb to the top of the ski slope is a burner and once you get to the top you can find a fun tight, rocky down hill section and thats about where the fun ends. I didn't get much of a chance to ride around the pond but that area looked kinda nice. The trails by the cambridge school entrance suck. The single track seems to go nowhere but peoples backyards and marshy unpassable areas and is a waste of space. Overall unless you live in the town next door and don't feel like driving anywhere I might go but otherwise don't waste your time.

Customer Service

Go down 117 to a small dead end road named Drabbington way. Follow the road all the way to the end you will see a baseball field. The trail is behind the field and the parking is right by the field. This is alot easier thehn parking by the school as suggested at the top.
