ATTENTION!!!!!! There is some new single track that has been built on the East Mountain Ridge area. This is brand new SUSTAINABLE REAL SINGLE TRACK built off camber with plenty of pinch points and obstacles to keep the quads off of it. The trail will be no fun for them even if they could get on it but no worries as plenty of attention to detail was done in building it. The trail was built to really ride in one direction (north to south) and in due time a huge many mile loop is planned extending into Bear Hole and back. The rumor is that this trail was built by a local obsessed Trail Elf!
The trail starts off of APREMONT HIGHWAY in Holyoke on the old trolley bed and heads up to Route 202 to the end of the guardrail. Parking can be had off the side of the road. This section is Easy and properly named APREMONT TRAIL and a sign can be found to the left and behind the moss covered flat boulder that sits in the clear cut fern area. Take the trolley trail and turn sharp right and up into the small clear cut. The large flat boulder is to your left. Deer are constantly around so be careful you dont get run over.
From there it crosses Route 202 and can again be picked up at the end of the guardrail on the other side. This trail winds up the side of the East Mountain ridge to the MM Trail and has been properly dubbed MOUNTAIN GOAT TRAIL. This trail is More Difficult due to the obtacles you will negotiate along with the exertion level. As you climb and negotiate the many rocky obtacles and negotiate the climbing turns it will then cross the AT&T Line and you are onto the Rim Trail which hugs the rocky rim looking down onto Route 202. It continues winding up onto a flat area with some short climbs and then out to the MM Trail. This trail is Easy.
A short ride up the MM Trail and sharp left at the very big boulder on your left you will pick up the very short but moderately technical LINK TRAIL where you will ride this across an old brushy jeep trail.
You will now pick up the MCLEAN TRAIL on the other side which is a very rocky technical trail where alot of rock armoring/bridging/staircasing has been done. This trail is Most Difficult with plenty of ups/downs, pinch points with downhill flows while negotiating rocky terrain. VERY FUN and CHALLENGING! This trail ends at the jeep trail for now. From here your on your own. Explore other trails.

My friend and I rode these trails this past Sunday after searching for new trails and reading many good reviews here. I was not very impressed and won't go back. Though I didn't ride the Hellgate side and may still check that out. I'm not sure what everyone was talking about with good single track being here, but all we rode was jeep roads and ATV trails with lots of loose rocks....and they were definitely the trails on the map....Upper Yetti, Widow Maker, Cauldron. There were a couple fun spots, but it's definitely not worth the effort. I'll stick to B-street, Earl's Trails, and Vietnam until we discover something else.

It's kind of funny to read the "Don't ride hear ooooohh" reviews... Funny some poeple who don't want others to know about a place because they think it will become like Disney World or something... Anyway... There is something for everyone. MAke it as hard or easy as you want. You can ride the trails around the reservoir if you like or hop into the trails opposite RT 202 at the base of the hills. Many places to go in. There you can find hard or easy climbs to the top of the ridge. Nice views of Barnes Airport and the valley. Some awesomes downs as you head south on the ridge past the towers just look for another trial head to the left about a third of the way down the fire road. Caution.. there is a couple of forks in the trail that are confusing. If you make to the bottom of the "stairway" then it's a moderate paved/dirt road ride back to the 'hoods of Westside. Check out Quarry Road off Prospect (K&M Electronics). Some parking at the end with little interference. Enjoy. Ignore the voodoo sayers here..

Off Prospect Road, West Springfield... You CAN park at K&m Electroics. No one cares. You could park a thousand cars ther without a problem.. pleeezzzee.. Go away Evil caution man... Or go up to Quarry and go to the end. There's a dirt area there.. Many more places like the reservoirs parking areas.

The ride along the ridge is very technical and fun. There is a huge area of new single track near the watershed area in West Springfield just south of the turnpike on Morgan road.

Customer Service

The best parking is next to Ashley reservoir on rt 202. Go up the trap rock hill past Mcclean res and follow the ridgeline south for serious trails.

I used to enter this trail from the McLean Reservoir entrance on RT 202, until the barrier chain link fence was installed around the reservoir. Im not familiar with the K&M entrance; Ill have to try it. Im very familiar with the trail the travels along the ridge to the tower, the views are phenomenal.

The ride is technical and lots of fun. The loop as I recall was about 6 miles along the ridge to the tower. Its a nice spot to hit after work for quick ride.

A lot of fun riding. Twisty and tough. The resivoirs are nice. The terrain is tough with a few banked turns that are lots of fun. My only complaint is that the place is like a huge rock garden, which ticks me off, but its worth it. However, I'm not sure if I actually got to the trail, I may have just rode the trail to get there, but not the actual trail. Also, in winter a lot of the trail has dirches filled with ice on it.

Customer Service

The K&M Entrance works however the above directions aren't complete. After making the left onto Prospect Rd., you must then make a right into an indutrial park and follow the signs to K&M. THEN you will find the trailhead.

You are at risk of being towed and/or having you vehicle searched by parking at K&M. Not only that, the trail from the water tank no longer exists. About 300 yards into the woods, a new development has been built over and through the trail land. I wasted precious Sunday morning time by going here.

Do not go here!
