Cabot Woods - Trail, Newton, Massachusetts

Cabot Woods - Trail, Newton, Massachusetts

DESCRIPTION

lots of easy stuff. the hill right to the right of the entrance is hard as fuck and a blast coming down. there are lots of little ps and dpwns that are quite tricky. there is a main little circle with lots of little trais going off of it and part of the fun is doling stuff from the other direction and finding new stuff. there is occasionaly a good sized jump, but it is never well built enough to withstand much abuse. it is ususaly noexistant in spring, because the snowmelt washes it away. someone needs to help rebuild it.

Unlike the first two reviewers, I'm not 12 y. old. Being a local bike mechanic and an avid MTB'er, I know my fair share of local trails. This is not a trail, this is a few dirt paths with a log. I've ridden there purposely just to find something that I may have missed the time before. Nothing. There is a section where I can push my bike to 'bout 28mph, but only for about 3-5 seconds depending on my determination. Then I have to stop at the bottom, ride around some suburban Newton snob with 5 dogs, and thats usually around the time I say "&^% this", and leave. Oh yeah, the "dirt jumps" are pathetic. they simply aren't jumpable. There is a root section, a 5 ft. down, then the jump. It's like a small dirty half-pipe, and your supposed to get "air" off of it, This place sucks, go somewhere else.

I wish I had two more hands so I could give this trail FOUR THUMBS DOWN. I don't care what your ability level is, beginner or not, this place sux! You can ride the whole thing in about 15 mins. You'll have more fun riding in downtown traffic with two flats and no seat.

Simple review: Don't waste your time if you live any more than five miles from this trail. It's fine if you just feel like spinning your wheels a little bit, but it's basically a town park. It's ideal if you want to go walk your dog, but if you're any more advanced than a kid riding your BMX bike, this place is just too small. In the middle of Newton, you ride a quarter mile and you're coming into someone elses backyard. There are some little hills that can challenge your skills, balance, lungs and muscle endurance to stay on your bike all the way up. The end result is reaching the top, making a turn and riding down another trail adjacent to the one you were just on. Bottom line, don't make a trip here if it's going to be a trip.

I hit these trails almost every day and it is a new experience every time. The rocks make it a lot harder (especially on the hills because your wheel spins out) Some of the hills are not suited for begginers and even some intermediate riders. The jump has recently been rebuilt by some other rider who did us all a great deed. It is really fun to hit because from one side it is a normal jump and from the other it is more of a jump with a drop. Some of the up hills are really challenging because of roots and gravel so good balance helps because at times you have to go very slowly. The down hills are awesome, especially this one with an 18" drop off because of a big root. It is a great place to practice your skills. Just watch out for walkers who usually have dogs. Always slow down and if the dog barks then stop dead in your tracks because if somebody gets bikes banned from doing something stupid I will not be happy at all. I give it 5 tires for all of its features in such a small area.

Take Commonwealth Ave. towards City Hall until you get to Morton st. go all the way down Morton until you get to a hill. Go down the hill then immediately take a sharp right turn and up another hill on Mill St. Keep on going up until you see an entrance in the fence to the left. Go in the entrance and get ready to start the trails with a tricky and very rocky downhill

There are lots of really easy trails, but there are also some really difficult climbs, and crazy downhills. 3 days ago i was biking there and ran through some dog shit. The only people i have seen there are people walking their dogs, so it makes sense. It got it on my rear wheel and it smeered onto my frame, brakes, got stuck in the cassette and drivetrain. It sucked. I just sprayed the whole bike with a hose, its a new bike too. you should go there. Its really fun, but watch out for the dog shit cuz now i'm kinda freeked out to go back there. it was a bitch to get off the bike. Its good for beginners because of some easy trails, and good for more advanced riders because of the climbs, downhills and jump. Its great if you live in the Newton area to just go for a ride without having to drive anywhere.

Customer Service

I usually enter through the Mill St. Entrance. After the downhill there's a short little uphill. I take a right after that and just let myself go where i feel like after that, you can't get lost in those trails. I would sometimes have a hard time finding the jumps though, but once your familiar with it easier to get around. ( if you follow the downhill after the mill st. entrance to the end, by just going straight, it will be fun and challenging for beginners.)

This is a great learning trail for beginners or intermediates that are seeking straightforward training/practice time. One can cover the entire trail route one hour or less. Then do it again! Also, there are a few good uphill and downhill areas to test your beginner or intermediate skill.

I have already reviewed Cabot Woods, (i'm the kid with who ran through dog crap) but this place should actually get 5 tires definitely not four. Its hell of a lot more fun everytime cuz you improve and loose your fear more and can get good speed. But still watch out for dog shit!!! Someone did a good job with the jumps too, their not bad.

Customer Service

I prefer the Mill St. Entrance. I like the downhill! If you start from the Blake St. entrance, you would have to work hard going uphill if you take the trail on your right straight the whole way up but you can get good speed starting from Mill.
