Like I do every summer, I recently returned to the area from Pennsylvania to visit family. Whenever I come back I always try to schedule in a ride to one of my top favorite spots - Bruce & Tom's Excellent Adventure. It was great getting back there. I hadn't been in a while and there were some (false) rumors going around that the spot had been closed for some reason. So I was a little worried about the condition that I would find the trails in. Let me tell you that those worries quickly faded - these guys have been hard at it keeping these trails awesome. You can just see the thought and effort that goes into how these interesting trails are laid out and then maintained.

Now on to the ride itself. The best place to start this ride is about halfway down Bray street at the green gate that has the Thomson Street Reservation sign. You go up a quick (50 to 80 yd) gravelly climb and at the top you will see a blue trail marker on your left. Enter there to do the trail network in the best direction. (Note- there is a more "official" looking Essex County Greenbelt parking area on Bray street that is much closer to Concord street, but in my opinion, that's really not the best place to begin the ride).
There is a common misconception that Bruce & Tom's Excellent Adventure is for extreme riders only. Nothing could be further from the truth in my opinion. Yes, it is true, you will have a better experience if you are a skilled rider, but I wouldn't say it's extreme in the sense that it's dangerous if you're not. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say that the majority of it is just really fun and interesting singletrack occasionally interrupted by very awesome and very challenging sections of natural geology.

Which brings me to why I love Bruce & Tom's excellent Adventure so much - it's diverseness. As you mountain bike through the area you'll notice that the geological features and/or the style of trail you are on now is nothing at all like where you were twenty minutes ago. It's as if you are riding at different geographical locales on a single ride. I'll never know whether the trail builders planned it that way or not but the effect is unique. The place is loaded with neat topographical features including hidden natural alcoves, scenic lookouts, cliffs and spines, massive glacial boulders just sitting there alone, trails that meander along extensive granite formations, g-outs, granite flume drop offs, and a stunning panorama view of the Gloucester, Essex, Ipswich and Newburyport coastlines from atop the granite formations known as Eagle Rocks.

Customer Service

When you do encounter any "extreme" stunts, they are cleverly incorporated into the natural topography... no ugly man made stuff here! This place is all natural! (with the exception of some necessary bridges)

Bruce and Tom have marked the way with twin boulders and blue markers. Follow them and you will see the whole area, you will not get lost and you will come out to exactly where you started (at the top of that gravelly climb). It's about 3-4 hours riding time if you choose to do the whole thing.

Finally, a note to Bruce and Tom: I hope I see you out on those trails some day, either riding your bikes or working on the trails, because I'd like to stop, shake your hand, and say thanks.

Hey Bruce and Tom, I'd like to say that I think your trails kick ass. They are flowy, techy, smooth and challenging and my favorite place to ride. I read your post back in December that the spot is closed. I'm not sure if that's just for the winter or what but I did hear some rumors of some A-holes that have been disrespectful of the neighbors and the priviledge of being there. That's just too bad. I don't know who those people are but they are not welcome anywhere I ride. I imagine a lot of the problems arise from the parking situation. Would it be cool to ride there if we park somewhere far away and ride up the road to get to the trailhead? I'd hate to see this place shut-off so I, and all my buds, are willing to do what it takes to keep the positive vibes flowing.

Dear DangerousDan, If you want to review our trails that’s fine, you’re entitled to your opinion. But please at least be fair and stop comparing apples and oranges. This IS NOT a freeride park. Bruce and I designed these trails with two words in mind - CROSS COUNTRY. The few sporadic stunts that are peppered about were put there almost as an afterthought and are meant to compliment the overall ride and not be its focus. You’re a freerider and that’s cool. Your bike weighs 47 lbs and has motorcycle tires… I don’t have a problem with that. If launching yourself off a stunt and then getting off your bike and walking back up to the top of the stunt again and again is your thing that’s great but you wont find it here. Here you will find well planned out, flowing, tight technical singletrack… with the occasional adrenaline rush thrown in the mix. It’s called “going riding”. Thanks, Tom
